第1巻『霊性の思想史』は、神道・仏教・民俗宗教の交差を軸に、日本人がいかに死と霊を受け止めてきたかを思想的に追う。複雑な地形と気候、自然災害の多さがもたらした自然への畏怖は、「むすひ」という生成の霊性を育み、それが神仏習合の根幹に位置づけられる。「言霊」の思想と和歌の表現力は、宗教的感性を詩的に媒介するものとして再評価される。
Volume I, Spiritual History of Thought, traces how the Japanese have perceived death and spirits through the intertwined traditions of Shinto, Buddhism, and folk religion. The complex geography and frequent natural disasters of Japan have nurtured a spiritual awe of nature, embodied in the generative concept of musubi, a core notion behind the syncretism of kami and buddhas.
とりわけ、空海の真言思想と万葉言霊信仰の接合、あるいは民藝運動に見られる「霊の宿るもの」としての器物観など、現代にもつながる霊性文化の連鎖が鮮やかに描かれている。そこには、柳宗悦が言う「健康な器物」こそが「霊性のかたち」であるとの洞察が重なる。
Kamata highlights vivid threads of spiritual culture extending into the present—such as the fusion of Kukai’s Shingon philosophy with kotodama (word-spirit) beliefs from the Manyoshu, or the mingei movement’s view of everyday objects as vessels of spirit.
第2巻『霊性の個人史』では、がんを宣告された自身の経験を踏まえ、死を「光源」として生きる意味が反照される。断食や滝行、民俗楽器の演奏、神道ソングライターとしての表現活動……そうした宗教実践の遍歴と身体知をもとに、死に向かう「私」との向き合いが語られる。
Volume II, Spiritual History of the Individual, reflects on the meaning of life through the author’s personal experience of a terminal cancer diagnosis, portraying death as a source of spiritual light.
ここで展開される死生観は、病いや死に抗うのではなく、それらを契機に「魂が嘘をつけない」地点へと至ることを希求する。「死別は喪失ではなく出会い直しである」という表現にも象徴されるように、本書には、死をも包み込む詩的な救いが静かに響く。
Rather than resisting illness or death, the view of life and death presented here seeks to embrace them as pathways toward a point where “the soul cannot lie.”
『古事記』『平家物語』『苦界浄土』に通底する「悲嘆の文学」や、空海や一遍の宗教体験に通じる「永遠の今」の感覚。こうした文脈を交錯させながら、鎌田は日本的霊性の通奏低音を聴き取ろうとする。
