仏教美術の殿堂として知られる奈良国立博物館。その開館130年を記念して刊行された本書『三千世界』は、2,000点に及ぶ所蔵品の中から、珠玉の130件を精選して収めた写真集である。
Renowned as a sanctuary of Buddhist art, the Nara National Museum marks its 130th anniversary with Sansen Sekai, a visually arresting volume showcasing 130 masterpieces selected from its collection of over 2,000 items.
写真はすべて、仏像や仏教遺跡の撮影で知られる六田知弘が1年がかりで撮り下ろしたもの。漆黒の背景に浮かぶ名宝の姿は、静謐で宇宙的な広がりを感じさせ、まさに「三千世界」の世界観を体現する。
All photographs were newly taken by renowned photographer Tomohiro Muda, who spent a year capturing these treasures. Set against pitch-black backgrounds, the artworks seem to hover in cosmic stillness, visually realizing the Buddhist notion of the “Three Thousand Worlds.”
ジャンルや年代をあえてシャッフルする大胆な構成により、飛鳥から室町までの時代を超えて、仏教美術の多層的な響き合いが生まれている。刺繍釈迦如来説法図や薬師如来坐像、大般若経など、いずれも永い祈りを宿す「かたち」であり、時を超えて我々に語りかける。
The daring layout, which intentionally eschews chronological or categorical order, allows the reader to witness resonances that span from the Asuka to the Muromachi periods. Each object—be it the embroidered Shakyamuni preaching scene, the seated Yakushi Buddha, or the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra—embodies forms of enduring prayer, speaking across centuries.
注目すべきは、各作品の解説に加え、奈良博130年の歩みや青柳正規・井上洋一両氏による序文・総論も収録されている点である。視覚だけでなく、言葉によってもその世界観が丁寧に導かれている。
Notably, the book includes not only detailed commentaries on each item but also introductory essays by Masaki Aoyagi and Yoichi Inoue, tracing the 130-year history of the museum. Readers are guided not just by imagery but through language into this rich world.
