明治から昭和初期にかけて、日々の暮らしの中には「死」が確かに存在していた。学校の帰り道に葬列とすれ違い、湯灌や納棺の光景が生活の一部にあった。元教員の著者・田原開起は、そうしたかつての風景を、一つひとつの記憶から丹念に聞き取っていった。
From the Meiji era to the early Showa period, death was an accepted part of everyday life in Japan. Children would pass funeral processions on their way home from school, and rituals like bathing and preparing the deceased were woven into the daily routine. Former teacher Haruyuki Tahara carefully recorded these memories from those who lived them.
本書『死と生の民俗』は、2008年に刊行された『死と生の民俗──産湯で始まり、湯灌で終わる』の改題文庫版である。著者自身の聞き書きによって編まれた民俗記録であり、民間の人々が語る言葉の中に、生と死にまつわる風習、感覚、価値観が脈々と息づいている。
This paperback edition of Folkways of Death and Life is a retitled version of Tahara’s 2008 book Born with the First Bath, Ending with the Last. Compiled through firsthand interviews, the book preserves a rich tapestry of beliefs and practices surrounding birth and death, passed down through the voices of ordinary people.
第一部では、葬儀の作法や野辺送り、骨拾いといった具体的な死の儀礼について語られ、第二部では結婚、出産、子育てなどの「生」に関わる民俗が展開される。両者は断絶されることなく、死と生とが連続した人生の流れとして捉えられている。
The first half of the book details death rituals such as funerals, bone-gathering, and burial processions. The second half explores life-cycle customs—marriage, childbirth, and child-rearing. Rather than treating them as opposites, the book presents life and death as a continuous, interconnected journey.
民俗学者ではない著者によるこの仕事が、なぜこれほど強い手応えをもって読まれるのか。それは、聞き書きの語り手の多くが100歳に近い高齢者であり、いまこの時代にはすでに失われた生活感覚が、言葉として生々しく刻まれているからだ。
Though Tahara is not a trained folklorist, his work resonates deeply. Many of his informants were nearing 100 years old, and their recollections vividly capture a way of life that has since faded—preserved now only in their words.
とりわけ注目すべきは、子どもが死と出会う場が日常にあったことへの気づきだろう。死を怖れの対象とするのではなく、日々の出来事の延長として受け止めていたかつての感性は、医療施設の外に死があった時代ならではの「リアリティ」でもある。
Perhaps most striking is the realization that children once encountered death as part of daily life. Rather than being feared, death was seen as a natural extension of everyday experience—a reflection of a time when death happened not in hospitals, but in the home.
本書は、死が見えなくなった現代社会において、その可視化の手がかりとなる。死者を送り、生者が生きる――その営みをつなぐ、かつて確かに存在した「風景」の記録である。
In today’s society, where death has become invisible, this book serves as a guide to reclaiming that visibility. It is a record of once-familiar scenes in which the living sent off the dead—and through that, affirmed their own life.
