While the book provides a sweeping overview of key themes—syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, the ritual of mine-iri (mountain entry), gender restrictions, and origin myths—it is particularly notable for its critical reflection on terminology. Suzuki probes the origins and usages of phrases such as “shintai-san” (sacred-body mountain), questioning not only what these words mean but how they have shaped the very structure of belief.

Rather than simply describing established doctrines, Suzuki asks why certain categories came into being and how they have functioned within religious discourse. In doing so, he opens up a fresh methodological space not just for the study of Shugendō, but for religious studies more broadly.
