Building and Inheriting Graves: A Sociological Study of the Dissolution of the “Ie” and the Continuity of Ritual Practices by Atsuhiro Tsujii (Kōbundō) is an ambitious work that reexamines postwar Japanese funerary and grave systems through the lens of “social actors” rather than the traditional family structure.
「墓の継承がなぜ問題視されるのか？」という問いを起点に、近現代の墓地行政や都市計画、石材業界の構造、永代供養墓の登場、骨仏の供養文化までを多角的に追う。家制度の崩壊以後、従来の「家」に代わって誰が、どのように死者を悼み、墓を維持しようとしているのか。そこに浮かび上がるのは、自治体、民間企業、寺院、そして個人が織りなす新しい〈祭祀のかたち〉である。
Beginning with the question “Why is the discontinuation of grave inheritance considered a social concern?”, the book explores a wide array of topics: the history of cemetery administration, urban planning and graves, the commercialization of funeral culture, and the rise of new practices such as perpetual memorial graves and memorial Buddhas made of bone. In an era where the traditional household (ie) is rapidly dissolving, who now mourns the dead and maintains their memory? What emerges is a complex interplay among municipalities, private enterprises, temples, and individuals—each shaping new forms of ritual continuity.

The book’s originality lies in shifting the analytical framework from “household” to “social actor,” making visible the uncertainties and hopes embedded in contemporary mourning practices. Drawing on the theory of “ontological insecurity” by Zygmunt Bauman, Tsujii examines how graves serve not only as a physical locus of remembrance but also as sites for sustaining human connection and social solidarity.
「忘れられたくない」という思いに寄り添いながら、死者とともに生きる仕組みをいかに保ちうるか。本書は、現代社会における死と記憶、そして公共性のあり方を問い直す上で、確かな視座を与えてくれる。
