Reading Taoist Culture and Japan: Onmyōdō, Shinto, Shugendō by the Japanese Society of Taoistic Studies (Bensei-sha) — Taoist Worldviews Within Japanese Religion
「道教」という言葉は、現代日本の日常会話にはあまり登場しない。しかし、神社の境内にある陰陽マークや星祭りのような行事、方位や年回りに基づく厄除けの習慣に、それは密かに生きている。私たちの宗教的想像力の深層には、知らず知らずのうちに道教的な世界観が根づいているのかもしれない。
The term “Taoism” rarely appears in everyday Japanese discourse. Yet it quietly persists in star festivals, directional rituals, and even shrine iconography. Without realizing it, people continue to live alongside Taoist worldviews embedded in religious and cultural life.
日本道教学会が編んだ『道教文化と日本：陰陽道･神道･修験道』（勉誠社）は、そうした「道教的要素」が日本の宗教文化にどのように受容され、変容してきたのかを、多分野の視点から丹念に検証した論集である。
Edited by the Japanese Society of Taoistic Studies, Taoist Culture and Japan: Onmyōdō, Shinto, Shugendō (Bensei-sha) is a multidisciplinary collection that reconsiders how Taoist elements were received, transformed, and embedded within Japanese religious culture.
本書の「はじめに」では、編集幹事の役を担った土屋昌明（日本道教学会前会長）が、道教という宗教が持つ多層的構造――教義や信仰に限らず、風水・医薬・術数・霊魂観・天文観・図像世界といった広範な文化的要素の複合体であること――にまず注意を促している。そうした文化としての道教が日本社会に浸透していった経路は複雑であり、その分析には特定宗教の教義史にとどまらない方法的柔軟性が必要とされる。
In the opening essay, Masaaki Tsuchiya, a specialist in Chinese intellectual history who served as editorial coordinator, outlines the structural complexity of Taoism—not only as doctrine or faith, but also as a cultural system encompassing feng shui, medicine, esoteric rituals, cosmology, and visual symbolism. He emphasizes the need to approach “Taoist culture” in Japan through methods beyond sectarian religious history.
本書は「総論」に加え、「陰陽道と道教」「神道と道教」「修験道と道教」「混淆する道教文化」の四部構成から成る。
The volume is divided into a general introduction and four sections: Onmyōdō and Taoism, Shinto and Taoism, Shugendō and Taoism, and Blended Taoist Cultures.
第1部「陰陽道と道教」では、日本古代における陰陽道成立の背景として、唐代道教の儀礼体系や祭祀技法が論じられる。たとえば、雷神の公式儀礼と日本の雷除け信仰との対応、陰陽師の儀礼に見られる「反閇」の型と道教における足踏み技法との関係が検証されている。付録として、術数の具体例に触れるコラムや、陰陽道研究者らによる座談会も収録されている。
Section I traces how ritual techniques and symbols from Tang-dynasty Taoism—such as thunder gods, foot-stomping exorcisms (henbai), and astral rites—were integrated into early Japanese Onmyōdō. It also includes a research dialogue among leading scholars.
第2部「神道と道教」では、中世神道における道教文献の受容が主題となる。『北斗経』や『老子述義』といった典籍が伊勢神道や両部神道の内部にどのように位置づけられていたのかが論じられ、近世の平田篤胤にいたるまで、神道思想に道教の洞天観がどのように生きていたのかが追跡される。
Section II focuses on Shinto thought, examining the influence of Taoist texts like the Beidou jing and Laozi shuyi on medieval Shinto writings, including those of the Ise tradition and Hirata Atsutane. The chapter further investigates the role of Yin-Yang and Five Phases cosmology.
第3部「修験道と道教」では、山岳修行を中核とする修験道における道教的影響が取り上げられる。英彦山修験の事例や、日本の霊山に見られる祠・儀礼・聖地観に、中国の道教山岳信仰との共通性が探られている。名山巡礼の文化的構造に関する考察も含まれており、比較宗教的視点が導入されている点も特色のひとつである。
Section III explores how Taoist cosmology was received in mountain asceticism (Shugendō), through field-based case studies like Hikosan. It examines how sacred peaks, pilgrimage rituals, and “immortal” beliefs echoed Chinese Taoist mountain worship.
第4部「混淆する道教文化」では、いわゆる制度宗教では捉えきれない道教的表象が焦点となる。福神信仰、狐憑き、陰陽師の民俗的変容、和製の尸解譚（仙人化物語）といったテーマを通じて、道教がいかに民間信仰の中に入り込み、他の宗教や習俗と融合しながら生きていたかが読み解かれる。三教一致説の思想的背景にまで踏み込んだ分析も行われている。
Section IV shifts to folk practices—fox possession, lucky deities, Japanese tales of corpse-transcendence (shijietan)—to analyze how Taoist motifs permeated everyday religion. It also considers the development of “Three Teachings Unity” theories in the Edo period.
前出の土屋のほかに、陰陽道の細井浩志、神道の伊藤聡、修験道の鈴木正崇、道教の酒井規史らが編集委員として名を連ねている。執筆陣にはこのほかにも多くの専門家が加わり、いずれも長年の研究に裏打ちされた緻密な論述を各章で展開している。
