Reading the Official Guidebook to the Documentary Film Guardians of the Harvest: Ritual Deer and Sacred Roles at Suwa Taisha
映画『鹿の国』公式ガイドブック〈目次〉
本欄ではこれまで、寺社観光、仏教や神道、あるいは葬送墓制など葬送文化にまつわる書籍を紹介してきた。だが今回は例外的に、市販もされている映画作品のパンフレットを取り上げる。紹介するのは、2025年に公開されたドキュメンタリー映画『鹿の国』の公式ガイドブック。単なる映画解説にとどまらず、諏訪大社の年中行事と神獣・鹿をめぐる信仰の重層的構造に迫った民俗学的な記録でもある。
This column has previously featured books on temple and shrine tourism, Buddhism and Shinto, as well as topics related to funerary culture and burial systems. In this special case, however, we turn our attention to a commercially available film pamphlet. The subject is the official guidebook to the 2025 documentary Shika no Kuni (Guardians of the Harvest). Far from serving as a simple companion to the film, the guidebook offers a layered folkloric record of the rituals surrounding the sacred deer at Suwa Taisha.
長野県・諏訪盆地に鎮座する諏訪大社は、上社・下社から成る日本有数の古社だ。社殿を持たず、山や樹を神体とする構造を今に伝え、御柱祭やミシャグジ信仰に象徴されるように、縄文以来の自然観が今も息づく。
Located in the Suwa Basin of Nagano Prefecture, Suwa Taisha is one of Japan’s most venerated ancient shrines. It comprises an Upper and a Lower Shrine and is notable for worshipping mountains and trees rather than buildings. Rituals such as the Onbashira Festival and the worship of Mishaguji spirits preserve an animistic worldview that traces back to the Jōmon era.
『鹿の国』が焦点を当てるのは、春の御頭祭。中世の記録には、かつてこの神事で鹿の首75頭分が神前に供えられていたと記されている。信仰の中で、鹿は土地と祈りをつなぐ存在として生き続けてきた。
The film centers on one particular rite at Suwa Taisha: the spring Ontōsai. Medieval sources note that 75 deer heads were once offered at this ritual. In Suwa’s spiritual landscape, the deer continues to serve as a mediator between land and prayer.
監督は弘理子。ネパールやチベットで自然と死生観を見つめる映像作品を手がけてきた彼女は、当初、諏訪の年間神事を網羅的に記録するつもりだった。だが撮影を重ねるうち、「神に捧げられる鹿」という存在に強く惹かれていった。その変化はパンフレットにも丁寧に記されており、風土と信仰が交差するなかで浮かび上がる鹿の姿が、感覚と視線を軸に描かれている。
Director Hiro Riko is known for her work on nature and mortality in Nepal and Tibet. Initially intending to document Suwa’s annual rituals as a whole, she found herself increasingly drawn to the deer as a sacred figure. This transformation is carefully detailed in the guidebook, where Hiro traces her journey through the local landscape and beliefs, creating a record that feels more like a visual essay than an academic analysis.

作品では、すでに廃絶した中世の神事「御室神事」の再現にも取り組んでいる。神の依り代とされた少年「大祝（おおほうり）」や、神使と呼ばれた子どもたちによる奉納芸能が、わずかな資料と伝承をもとに再構成された。プロデューサーの北村皆雄は、日本映像民俗学の会の代表も務める記録映画の第一人者。本作全体を、映像民俗学の観点から力強く支えている。
The film also revisits the long-lost medieval Mimuro ritual. Reconstructed from fragments and oral traditions, the ceremony features a child priest (Ōhōri) and young ritual attendants performing sacred dances. Producer Kitamura Minao, who also leads the Japan Association of Visual Folklore, supported the project with his expertise in ethnographic filmmaking.
鹿という存在が信仰と結びつく過程を、農耕・狩猟・死生観という三つの軸から描き出している点も印象深い。諏訪大社では、かつて鹿肉を神前に供えた者に「鹿食免（かじきめん）」と呼ばれる札が授与された。肉食の禁忌を一時的に解くこの札は、生存と祈りのあいだに鹿が立っていたことを静かに物語っている。
Another compelling aspect is how the film frames the deer through three intersecting lenses: agriculture, hunting, and death. At Suwa Taisha, those who once presented venison at the shrine received kajikimen talismans. These amulets temporarily lifted the taboo on meat consumption, pointing to the deer’s pivotal role at the intersection of survival and spirituality.
映画の英語タイトル「GUARDIANS OF THE HARVEST（監督訳：豊饒の守人）」も、この象徴性を簡潔に表している。鹿は、農耕の予祝と霊的な供犠の両面を担う存在だった。
The English title, Guardians of the Harvest, captures this symbolism with quiet precision. The deer is depicted as both a harbinger of agricultural blessing and an agent of sacred sacrifice.
映像の力は、言葉の及ばない祈りの現場を捉える。雪の中の鹿の瞳、神前に重ねられた首、奉納される舞。どの場面にも、土地にしみ込んだ祈りの気配がある。語りすぎず、ただそこに「あるもの」として神事を映し出す映像と、それを補完する公式ガイドブックの構成は、信仰の記録として読むことができる。
Film captures what language often cannot: the gaze of a deer in snow, the stacked heads on an altar, the sacred dances performed for unseen deities—all radiate the atmosphere of prayer rooted in place. The film avoids over-explaining. It simply presents what is, and the guidebook’s structure supports this ethos—offering itself as a quiet document of living faith.
本作は、諏訪という一地域の特殊な文化を描きながら、むしろ古代的な「信仰のかたち」がどのように土地に残り、人々の暮らしに重なっているかを示している。そこに表れるのは、制度として整えられた宗教ではなく、人びとの暮らしと密接に結びついた祈りのかたちだ。
While the film depicts the unique cultural fabric of Suwa, it also gently reveals how ancient forms of belief continue to overlap with the rhythms of daily life. What we witness is not a systematized religion, but a form of prayer closely tied to how people live.
『鹿の国』は、記録映像でありながら、かつて行われていた神事を現代に再び立ち上げる「記憶の器」でもある。
As much as it is a documentary, Guardians of the Harvest is a vessel that revives and preserves the memory of sacred rites.
