本書は、朝日新聞の連載「福岡伸一の動的平衡」を改題して書籍化された既刊『ゆく川の流れは、動的平衡』（2022年）に、新たな原稿を加え、新書として再編集したものである。分子生物学の視点から、いのちの流れと利他性の意味を静かに掘り下げていく。
This book reworks his previous volume Yuku Kawa no Nagare wa, Dōteki Heikō (The River Flows On, in Dynamic Equilibrium), originally compiled from his newspaper column, by adding new material and reframing it as a Shinsho (pocket-size edition). From the standpoint of molecular biology, Fukuoka gently unpacks the meaning of life and altruism as a sustained flow.
中心概念である「動的平衡」とは、変化し続けながら均衡を保つ状態を指す。私たちの身体は、常に古い細胞を壊し、新しい細胞を作り続けている。その結果、私という存在は一見同じようでいて、分子レベルでは常に入れ替わっている。
At the heart of the book is the idea of “dynamic equilibrium”—a state in which constant change maintains overall balance. Our bodies are continuously breaking down old cells and creating new ones. Although we appear unchanged, on the molecular level, we are in perpetual renewal.
福岡は、この絶え間ない自己再生の原理こそが、生命がエントロピーの増大という宇宙の法則に抗う戦略であると説く。自己を破壊しながら保存する。これは仏教の無常観や、社殿を定期的に建て替える神道的構造とも通底する。
Fukuoka argues that this ceaseless self-renewal is life’s way of resisting entropy—the universal law of increasing disorder. Life sustains itself by breaking itself down. This idea resonates with the Buddhist notion of impermanence and with Shinto practices such as rebuilding shrine structures in a cycle.
本書のもう一つの柱は「利他性」である。利他とは自己犠牲ではなく、余剰を自然に他者へ手渡すことだ。与え、そして与えられる。その循環のなかで、生命は一瞬の輝きを放ち、また他へと流れ出していく。
Another central theme of the book is altruism. For Fukuoka, altruism is not self-sacrifice but the natural sharing of surplus. To give and to receive—this cycle lets life flicker for a moment and then continue onward.
まさに、仏教における布施や、自己の功徳を他者へと差し向ける「回向（えこう）」の思想にも通じる、生命と世界の循環がここに描かれている。
This closely parallels Buddhist practices such as dāna (generosity) and ekō—the dedication of one’s merit to others—depicting the cycle of life and world in quiet motion.
『動的平衡は利他に通じる』は、福岡伸一が現在、2025年大阪・関西万博のシグネチャーパビリオン「いのち動的平衡館」のプロデューサーを務めていることとも呼応して、科学と思想、個体と社会、生と死のあいだをたゆたう、精妙な思索の書である。
Dynamic Equilibrium Leads to Altruism is a book that also resonates with Fukuoka’s current role as producer of the Signature Pavilion “Inochi Dōteki Heikō-kan (The Pavilion of Life’s Dynamic Equilibrium)” at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai. It is a subtle meditation drifting between science and thought, individual and society, life and death.
