京都市立芸術大学で人気を博した「日本仏教彫刻史」の講義をもとにした本書は、仏像がどのように生まれ、変化してきたかを、通史としてわかりやすく描く。著者は同大学で長年教鞭をとった美術史家・礪波恵昭。教え子であり『仏像に恋して』の作者として知られる真船きょうこが、イラストとエッセイ漫画で講義内容を立体的に再現している。
Based on a highly regarded art history lecture at Kyoto City University of Arts, this book clearly traces the historical flow of Japanese Buddhist sculpture. The author, Professor Keisho Tonami, taught art history at the university for many years. His former student, manga artist Kyoko Mafune—known for Falling in Love with Buddhist Statues—brings the content to life through detailed illustrations and essay-style comics.
