著者は、国立歴史民俗博物館で葬送儀礼と墓制の民俗史を長年研究してきた関沢まゆみ。折口信夫と柳田國男という二つの方法論を踏まえながら、とりわけ柳田が重視した「順序に置く比較」の視座に立ち、全国各地の盆行事と葬墓習俗の事例を読み解く。

Sekizawa focuses on regional and temporal variation. Even in shared customs such as Bon altar arrangements, local modes of spirit reception diverge. Burial sites—whether in farmland, near dwellings, or by riverbanks—reveal an interplay between environmental context and views of the soul.
