本書が提示する定義は明快だ。聖地とは、「特別な物語があり、広く共有されている場所」。宗教的な聖性に限らず、人びとの記憶や信仰、憧憬が幾重にも重なる場所のあり方を、その成立や由来、伝わる伝説と共に可視化してゆく。
The definition offered is simple yet profound: a sacred site is “a place with a special story that is widely shared.” These locations are not only religiously significant but are also imbued with collective memory, faith, and longing. The book visualizes their origins, legends, and layered meanings.
構成は全7章。伊勢神宮・出雲大社・高千穂を軸に「神話と結びつく三大聖地」を俯瞰する第1章に始まり、山・水・樹木・岩石など自然信仰の聖地、人物ゆかりの聖地、霊験譚に彩られた聖地へと章を重ねる。最終章では、四国遍路や熊野古道などの巡礼文化に焦点を当て、「聖地巡礼」という行為の多様性と現代性を描き出す。
The book is organized into seven chapters. It begins with Japan’s three great mythological sacred sites—Ise Jingu, Izumo Taisha, and Takachiho—before moving through sacred mountains, forests, stones, and waters. Later chapters highlight sites tied to legendary figures and miracle tales. The final chapter focuses on pilgrimage culture, such as the Shikoku 88-temple circuit and the Kumano Kodo, portraying the diversity and contemporary relevance of sacred travel.
取り上げられるのは、全国47都道府県・150箇所超におよぶ聖地。伊勢神宮や富士山など古層の信仰を湛えた神社仏閣や自然の聖地から、温泉や滝にまつわる信仰地、現代に再評価される霊験の場まで。ジャンルを越えて聖地が交差する構成には、日本列島における「場所の力」の奥行きがあらわれている。
Over 150 sacred sites from all 47 prefectures are introduced—from Ise Jingu and Mt. Fuji to healing hot springs, waterfalls, and rediscovered sacred spaces. The book crosses genres, illuminating the depth of “place power” across the Japanese archipelago.
