The author, Satoshi Itō, specializes in the intellectual history of medieval Japan, with a particular focus on repositioning medieval Shinto. This volume carefully traces the development of medieval Shinto—especially Ryōbu Shinto, rooted in esoteric Buddhism, and Ise Shinto—its interactions with Buddhism, and the shifts in the conception of kami prior to the restructuring that occurred in Kokugaku and the modern era.
補論「神道と天皇」では、神道がつねに天皇と結びついていたという通念に対し、中世における両者の相対的独立性を史料から実証的に提示する。天皇制と神道の結節を前史的に捉える視座がそこにある。
The appendix “Shinto and the Emperor” critically examines the widespread belief that Shinto has always been inseparably tied to the imperial institution. Drawing from historical sources, Itō shows their relative independence in the medieval period, offering a prehistory of modern entanglements.
加えて、ここ10年のあいだに刊行された中世神道研究の成果を踏まえた補注も精緻を極める。現在進行形で再編されつつある神道史研究の「いま」を反映した構成となっている。
The annotations also incorporate insights from major research published in the last decade on medieval Shinto. As a result, this new edition reflects the state-of-the-art in a field currently undergoing dynamic reevaluation.
