本書『死を笑う』は、古典落語に描かれた死と葬送の場面を手がかりに、江戸から昭和初期にかけての日本人の死生観と葬送文化を読み解こうとする試みである。
Can we laugh at death? Laughing at Death explores how classical rakugo storytelling depicts scenes of death and mourning, using them as a lens to understand Japanese attitudes toward life and death from the Edo period through early Shōwa.
取り上げられる噺は『らくだ』『死神』『化け猫』から『三年酒』まで。死体をかつぎ、ニセ坊主が経を上げ、湯灌や野辺送りが登場する一方で、幽霊や死神、人を化かす狐や猫といった異界の住人も登場する。笑いのなかに死があり、死のなかに笑いがある――それが落語という芸能の特質であり、時代の死生観の反映でもある。
Stories like “Rakuda,” “Shinigami,” “Bakeneko,” and “San-nenzake” feature corpses, fake priests, ceremonial bathing of the dead, and funeral processions—alongside ghosts, death gods, foxes, and cats that deceive and beguile. In rakugo, death is embedded in humor, and humor finds its place in death. This duality reflects not only the nature of the art form but also historical Japanese views on mortality.
著者は長年、葬儀と弔いを取材してきたルポライター・高橋繁行。死を扱う雑誌『SOGI』での連載や、切り絵による絵解き民俗誌でも知られる。本書にも、湯灌や死装束、野辺送りや棺桶、喪主のふるまいなど、落語に登場する「とむらいの情景」が細密に描き出されている。
Author Shigeyuki Takahashi is a veteran journalist who has long covered funerals and mourning rituals. Known for his serialized work in SOGI magazine and his cut-paper illustrations of folk customs, Takahashi brings the imagery of rakugo funerals—bathing the dead, burial clothes, coffins, and the role of the mourner—vividly to life in this volume.
本編に添えられた多数のコラムでは、実際の葬儀例や芝居に描かれた死の場面が紹介され、読み物としても厚みがある。ときにユーモアをまじえながら、しかし死に対して決して軽んじることなく描かれるのは、日本人にとっての死が「笑いと祈り」のあわいにあったことの証でもある。
Numerous columns interspersed throughout the book introduce real-life funeral episodes and theatrical portrayals of death, adding depth to the narrative.
