本書『近世日本の国家権力と宗教』は、修験道・陰陽道・神道といった、仏教中心主義の歴史叙述から見落とされがちだった制度宗教を取り上げ、江戸幕府を軸とした国家権力の形成過程と不可分に描き出した画期的著作である。
State Power and Religion in Early Modern Japan breaks away from the conventional Buddhism-centered narrative by shedding light on institutional religions such as Shugendō, Onmyōdō, and Shinto. It presents a groundbreaking analysis of how these were intricately woven into the formation of Tokugawa state power.
取り上げられるのは、奉幣使や本末体制、修験本山派の院家と触頭、甲州郡内地方の在地組織、土御門家に代表される陰陽道の制度構造、公家・門跡の宗教的権威といった、多層的かつ全国的な宗教秩序の編成である。
Topics include the imperial envoys for shrine offerings (hōheishi), the hierarchical temple-shrine system (honmatsu), Shugendō’s head temple networks and local functionaries, the institutional apparatus of Onmyōdō under the Tsuchimikado family, and the religious authority of court nobles and monzeki temples—all contributing to a complex, nationwide religious order.

As Takano himself recalls—likening his efforts to “tilling an untouched field at the foot of Mt. Hoshiyama”—this work opened up empirical pathways into the study of institutional religion. Subsequent developments have made it clear that the Edo period can no longer be understood without Shinto priests, onmyōji, mountain ascetics, and ritual practitioners. This book helped build that foundation.
