一見すれば公民館か納屋のような外観を持つ「道場」は、浄土真宗の信仰を住民が自発的に守り伝えてきた「お寺未満の寺」とも呼ばれる場所。制度化される以前の信仰のかたちが、今もひそやかに続けられている。
These dojo, which may resemble a community center or a simple shed, are often referred to as “pre-temple temples”—spaces where local residents have voluntarily sustained the practice of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism. They preserve a form of devotion that predates institutional formalization.
本書は、福井県を中心に残る道場の一年を丁寧に追い、その季節ごとの営みを描き出したドキュメンタリーである。正月の箸始め、春の顕如堂、夏の御講様、秋の報恩講、そして冬の大雪と機織り。土地に根差した信仰の時間が、繊細な筆致で綴られる。
This documentary-style work follows the annual cycle of Jōdo Shinshū dojo across Fukui Prefecture. From New Year’s “first chopsticks,” to spring gatherings at Kennyo Hall, summer’s gokō-sama observances, autumn Hōonkō services, and snowbound winter weaving rituals—each page evokes a deeply rooted spiritual rhythm.
僧侶がいなくても法要は行われ、人びとは「聞法」の喜びをともにする。そこには、仏法が制度に回収される前の、素朴で力強い信仰のかたちが息づいている。記録者である前川は、地域に生きる人々の語りと風景を通じて、知られざる真宗信仰の古層を掘り起こしてゆく。
Even without priests, rituals are conducted, and people share the joy of listening to the Dharma (monpō). These settings embody a simple yet resilient mode of faith that existed before Buddhist institutionalization. Through stories and landscapes, Maekawa brings to light the overlooked layers of Jōdo Shinshū devotion.
