本書は、2018年刊『ペットと葬式 日本人の供養心をさぐる』を大幅に加筆修正し、改題したもの。人間の葬儀が簡素化し、「墓じまい」が急増する一方で、ペットは丁重に葬られ、ロボットやパソコン、郵便物、入れ歯、太陽や月までもが供養の対象となっている。著者はこの逆転現象に注目し、全国各地で取材を重ねながら、日本人の供養観の変容を描き出す。
This book is a significantly revised and retitled edition of Ukai’s 2018 work Pets and Funerals: Exploring the Japanese Spirit of Mourning. While human funerals are being simplified and grave closures increase nationwide, animals receive elaborate rites—and inanimate objects like robots, computers, mail, dentures, and even the sun and moon are being memorialized. Through on-site reporting across the country, Ukai explores the shifting views on death and remembrance in Japanese society.
構成は、「奇妙なモノ供養」「動物を供養する」「魚を供養する」「昆虫を供養する」「草木の供養」の五章から成り、それぞれに具体的な供養事例が紹介される。たとえば、墓じまいで不要になった墓石を引き取って供養する寺の存在や、鎌倉街道や道玄坂を「道路」として祀る例、さらには天体や自然現象にまで向けられる祈りのかたちが語られる。
The book is organized into five chapters: “Strange Memorials for Objects,” “Memorializing Animals,” “Memorializing Fish,” “Memorializing Insects,” and “Memorializing Plants.” Each section features real-life examples—such as temples that accept and ritually honor discarded gravestones, or those that commemorate roads like Kamakura Kaido and Dogenzaka. The narrative even ventures into prayers offered to celestial bodies and natural phenomena.
供養とは誰のために、何のためにあるのか。その問いに、現代日本の実践を通して迫る本書は、死生観を再考するうえでも示唆に富んでいる。
Who is memorialization for, and why does it matter? Ukai’s reportage poses these questions through vivid, sometimes eccentric, but deeply reflective cases—encouraging readers to rethink how contemporary Japan engages with the spirit of mourning.
