In its final chapter, the book examines how Japanese Buddhism has undergone a distinctive transformation shaped by historical and societal factors. Why do Japanese monks marry, drink alcohol, and pray at both temples and shrines? The book’s underlying message is that Buddhism, far from being fixed, is a religion capable of flexible and context-sensitive transformation.
