When people ask a Buddhist priest how much to give as an offering during a funeral or memorial service, the answer is often, “As you feel.” Many are left puzzled by this ambiguity. In The Mechanism of Offerings, Buddhist scholar Toshifumi Shimizu unpacks this discomfort by examining the divergence between Buddhist teachings and contemporary reality.
本来、布施は「見返りを求めない施し」とされ、仏教の根本的実践のひとつとされてきた。しかし現代日本においてそれは、対価性の意識と結びつき、「払うからには何か得たい」という感覚が強まっている。清水はそこに、出家戒や禁欲を失った現代日本仏教の構造的問題を見いだす。
Traditionally, dāna (offering) is one of the core practices of Buddhism—an act of giving without expecting anything in return. But in contemporary Japan, offerings are increasingly perceived as transactions. Shimizu points to this shift as evidence of deeper structural issues in Japanese Buddhism, where monastic precepts and renunciation have largely faded.

日本人にとって先祖供養は大切だが、宗教への信仰とは別次元にある。だからこそ、「お布施を払わない」という選択肢が現実味を帯びてきた今、その意味とあり方を再定義する必要がある。清水は本書を通じて、近代以降の仏教と社会の変容をたどりつつ、お布施という行為に込められた倫理と論理を問い直す。
For many Japanese, honoring ancestors is meaningful, but it’s not the same as religious belief. As the idea of not giving offerings becomes more acceptable, it is time to reconsider what offerings actually mean. Shimizu traces the historical transformations of Buddhism in modern society to reexamine the ethical and conceptual foundations of the act of giving.
