玄洋社は1879年、旧福岡藩士を中心に結成された自由民権運動団体であり、当初は議会開設と憲法制定を求めて活動していた。その後、アジア諸国の独立支援や国権拡張を掲げ、対外活動も展開した。孫文の支援などを通じ、日中韓の近代化と連携に関与したが、戦後は「右翼団体」とのレッテルを貼られ、長く語られることがなかった。
Founded in 1879 by former Fukuoka domain samurai, the Genyosha began as a civil rights group demanding constitutional government. Over time, it supported Asian independence movements and Japanese diplomatic expansion. Despite aiding figures like Sun Yat-sen, it was later labeled a “right-wing” organization and largely disappeared from postwar discourse.
青山霊園、谷中霊園、寛永寺、泉岳寺、木母寺といった都内の霊園には、玄洋社の頭山満や朝鮮独立運動家の金玉均、中国革命を支援した孫文らにまつわる墓所が点在する。本書は、こうしたアジア主義の人脈が交差した痕跡を丹念に追っていく。
In Tokyo, cemeteries like Aoyama, Yanaka, Kan’eiji, Sengakuji, and Mokuboji house the graves of figures such as Toyama Mitsuru (Genyosha leader), Korean independence advocate Kim Ok-gyun, and Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen. The book traces these interconnected pan-Asianist networks.

The book also revisits forgotten stories—such as the memorial to political assassin Kurushima Tsuneki and the covert return of Kim Ok-gyun’s remains to Japan—revealing facets of Japanese modernity rarely found in school textbooks.
後半では、著者の出身地である福岡に舞台を移し、玄洋社の思想的背景や活動の広がりを解説する。アジア解放を掲げた頭山満や宮崎滔天の足跡をたどりながら、戦後なぜ玄洋社が封印されたのかを検証する。
The latter chapters shift to Fukuoka—Urabe’s hometown—unpacking Genyosha’s ideology and regional roots. The legacy of pan-Asianist activists like Toyama Mitsuru and Miyazaki Toten is explored, as well as how and why Genyosha was suppressed in postwar Japan.
墓碑銘が記すのは死者の名だけではない。刻まれた言葉の背後に潜む、記憶と政治、そして語られなかった歴史をたどる文化的記録である。
