An American-born guide to Buddhism has been thoughtfully adapted for a Japanese readership. Kenneth Tanaka’s An Eye-Opening Introduction to Buddhism (Hozokan) is a Japanese version of his original work, Jewels: An Introduction to American Buddhism for Youth, Scouts, and the Young at Heart, written for young people and scouts in the United States.
原著『Jewels』は、多様な仏教の伝統が共存するアメリカで、「三宝（仏・法・僧）」を“宝石”に見立て、それぞれが自らの光を放てることを伝えるメッセージ性に満ちていた。仏教スカウト運動とも連携し、実践的かつ身近な価値観で構成された内容は、多様な文化的背景をもつ若者たちに広く受け入れられた。
In the original Jewels, Tanaka presents the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—as metaphorical gems that reflect each person’s unique inner value. The book gained popularity among American youth, especially within Buddhist scout communities, by offering a practical and inclusive approach to Buddhist teachings.
本書の日本版では、アメリカ仏教の特徴として紹介されている六つの価値観――「平等性」「実践重視」「科学的態度」「社会的関与」「“今ここ”への集中」「ユーモア」――を軸に、日常生活の問題や悩みに仏教がどう向き合えるかを、物語やたとえを通じて解説している。
This Japanese edition retains six key values highlighted in American Buddhism—equality, practice-based learning, scientific attitude, social engagement, focus on the present moment, and humor. Through relatable stories and analogies, it shows how Buddhist teachings can address everyday struggles and dilemmas.
日系アメリカ人三世の仏教学者であるタナカ氏は、スタンフォード大学やカリフォルニア大学バークレー校で哲学博士号を取得し、異なる文化圏をつなぐ立場から仏教の研究と実践に取り組んできた。
Kenneth Tanaka, a third-generation Japanese American and scholar of Buddhism, earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, and has worked to bridge Buddhist study and practice across cultural boundaries.
