Japan has often been called “a country of religious gray zones.” Kazuto Hongo, professor at the University of Tokyo’s Historiographical Institute, argues that this ambiguity—where Buddhism, Shintō, Christianity, and new religions have clashed and blended—has been a source of Japan’s resilience and flexibility.

In this book, Shūkyō no Nihonshi (The Religious History of Japan), Hongo explores how religion underpinned politics, wars, and diplomacy, while simultaneously shaping the nation’s cultural identity.
たとえば、奈良・東大寺の大仏造立に八幡神の加護を仰ぎ、仏教寺院の中に神社が建立されたように、宗教的な実践が国家建設と不可分だったことが歴史の各所に見て取れる。
For instance, the construction of the Great Buddha at Tōdaiji in Nara relied on the support of the deity Hachiman, resulting in a Shintō shrine being built within a Buddhist temple—a powerful example of how religion and state-building were historically intertwined.
