本書は、明治から昭和戦前期にかけての葬儀、施餓鬼、開帳、授戒会、禅会、仏前結婚式などの儀礼を取り上げ、近代社会との相互作用のなかでそれらがいかに形を変えてきたかを実証的に描き出す。
It presents an empirical exploration of how key Buddhist rituals—funerals, Segaki rites, public unveilings of sacred icons, ordination ceremonies, zazen meetings, and Buddhist-style weddings—transformed in response to the currents of modern society from the Meiji era through the prewar Shōwa period.
これまでの儀礼研究が思想的枠組みに偏りがちであったのに対し、本書は「近代における仏教儀礼が、いかに評価され、いかに隆盛または衰退していくのか、その過程を描くことを試みる」（序章）という立場から、必要に応じて一般新聞、書籍、寺誌なども博捜し、民衆と仏教実践の実相に迫っていく。
Where previous studies have often focused on doctrinal frameworks, this volume—as stated in its introduction—aims to “trace how Buddhist rituals were received, flourished, or declined during modernity.” To that end, it draws on a wide range of primary sources, including general newspapers, books, and temple histories, in addition to Buddhist journals, in order to illuminate the lived realities of ritual practice among the populace.
たとえば葬儀では、明治初期の国家的統制、キリスト教との競合、さらに「永眠」という言葉をめぐる社会的論争などが分析され、儀礼が宗教間関係と世論の両面から再編されていく様相が浮かび上がる。
In the case of funerals, Takei investigates how government oversight in early Meiji, competition with Christianity, and debates over euphemisms like “eternal sleep” shaped the reconfiguration of funerary rituals across both interreligious and public spheres.
一方、施餓鬼に関しては、震災や戦争に際する慰霊、鉄道や動物といった非人間対象への供養の拡張が紹介され、儀礼がいかに社会的想像力を拡張し、公共性を帯びていったかが描かれる。
In his study of Segaki rites, the author illustrates how rituals were adapted to mourn victims of disasters and war, and even extended to memorialize trains and animals—revealing the broadening social imagination and public function of Buddhist offerings.
禅会や仏前結婚式、さらには出開帳や遠忌など、これまで本格的に扱われてこなかった主題も詳細に考察されており、近代仏教がいかにして日常生活と接続し、新たな実践の空間を切り拓いていったかが読み解かれる。
Other understudied phenomena such as lay zazen gatherings, Buddhist wedding ceremonies, public exhibitions of icons, and distant memorial services are also closely analyzed, offering insights into how modern Buddhism reconfigured its relationship with everyday life and ritual practice.
巻末には、明治以降の全国の開帳年表（392件）や、禅会・施餓鬼・仏前結婚式の開催一覧といった貴重な資料も収録されており、近代仏教儀礼の実態を検証するための信頼できる資料群となっている。
The appendix features a nationwide chronology of icon exhibitions since the Meiji period (392 entries), along with collated records of zazen meetings, Segaki rites, and Buddhist wedding ceremonies drawn from a range of magazines and newspapers—offering a trustworthy source base for examining the actual workings of modern Buddhist ritual.
