Protecting 1,300 Years of Prayer: Kinosaki Onsenji Launches Crowdfunding for Bell Tower Restoration
兵庫県豊岡市にある城崎温泉の守護寺・温泉寺が、江戸時代に建立された鐘楼の修繕に向けてクラウドファンディングを開始した。鐘楼は山の中腹に位置し、地盤のずれによって基礎が損傷。移築による保存が急務となっている。
Onsenji Temple, guardian of Kinosaki Onsen in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to restore its Edo-period bell tower. Located on a hillside, the structure shows significant foundational damage caused by ground shifts, making relocation and preservation an urgent task.
城崎温泉の始まりは養老4年（720年）。修行中の道智上人が祈りを込めて一千日を過ごした末、湯が湧き出たと伝えられる。天平10年（738年）には、聖武天皇の勅願によって「末代山温泉寺」が創建され、湯と祈りの地として歩みを始めた。
The origins of Kinosaki Onsen trace back to 720, when hot springs are said to have emerged following a thousand-day practice by the monk Dōchi Shōnin. In 738, the temple was formally established under imperial patronage and named Matsudai-zan Onsenji by Emperor Shōmu.
かつて城崎を訪れる湯治客は、温泉寺に参拝して湯杓を受ける「古式入湯作法」を経てから湯に浸かっていた。湯を授かりものと捉え、礼節をもって癒しに臨むという信仰のかたちが、町の風土を支えていた。
Until modern times, visitors to Kinosaki were expected to pay respects at Onsenji before bathing, receiving a ritual ladle and learning proper bathing etiquette. This act of gratitude toward the spring was central to the region’s spiritual and social customs.
今回修繕が計画されている鐘楼は、万治元年（1658年）の建築で、長く町の人々に親しまれてきた。戦前までは日々鐘の音が響き、城崎の暮らしに寄り添っていたという。
The bell tower in need of repair dates back to 1658 and has long served as a familiar presence. Before the war, its chime marked the rhythms of daily life in the hot spring town.
移築は約10メートルの曳家によって行われる予定。山間地のため大型機材は使えず、人力を中心とした作業となる。費用は1300万円に上る見込みで、温泉寺ではその一部を広く募る。
The restoration will involve moving the structure about ten meters using a traditional hikiyā method, as large machinery cannot reach the slope. The estimated cost is ¥13 million, part of which is being sought through public contributions.
温泉地の賑わいの背後で、寺は静かにその信仰を守ってきた。クラウドファンディングを通じ、町と湯と祈りが重なり合うこの土地の記憶を、あらためて見つめ直すきっかけになればとしている。
Behind the bustle of the resort town, the temple has quietly upheld its role as a site of prayer. Through this crowdfunding effort, Onsenji hopes to renew public awareness of the deep-rooted bond between the town, its hot springs, and its enduring spirit.
