New Hybrid Memorial Service “teraumi” Launches — Combining Temple Interment and Ocean Scattering

供養の新たなかたちを提案する『teraumi（テラウミ）』の初出航が行われた。寺院への納骨と海洋散骨を組み合わせた“ハイブリッド供養”として、鹿児島県の有限会社縁が福岡県田川市の西岸寺と連携して実施した。
A new form of memorial service called teraumi has made its inaugural launch. The “hybrid memorial” combines traditional temple interment with ocean scattering, and is jointly carried out by En Co., Ltd. (Kagoshima) in partnership with Saigan-ji Temple in Tagawa, Fukuoka.
『teraumi』では遺骨の一部を海へ還しつつ、残りを寺院に納骨することで、自然への回帰と「手を合わせる場」の両立を図る。
The service returns part of the remains to nature through scattering at sea, while preserving a place for family prayer at the temple, offering both environmental and spiritual continuity.
西岸寺の中西住職は、海洋散骨に対する遺族の“寂しさ”に寄り添う発想だとし、自らも船に乗りその意味を体感した。
Chief Priest Nakanishi of Saigan-ji notes that teraumi arose from a desire to address the loneliness some families feel with ocean-only scattering. He joined the voyage himself to better understand its impact.
厚労省の統計では、墓じまいを含む改葬はこの10年で1.6倍に増加。散骨への関心が高まる一方、すべての遺骨を自然に還すことへの抵抗感も根強い。
According to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, grave closures and relocations have increased by 60% over the past decade. While interest in ocean scattering is growing, many remain hesitant to part with all physical remains.
『teraumi』はこうしたニーズに応える選択肢として、現在鹿児島・熊本・福岡の複数寺院と連携し、全国展開も視野に入れている。
To address this, teraumi currently partners with multiple temples across southern Japan, with plans for nationwide expansion.
