Naoki Prize-winning author Sayako Nagai has released a new novel, The Door to the Hidden Buddha. Set against the backdrop of the anti-Buddhist movement during the Meiji era, the novel explores the controversial unveiling of the Guze Kannon statue, a hidden Buddha housed at Hōryū-ji Temple in Nara. It vividly portrays the individuals who fought to preserve cultural heritage amid a time of political and social upheaval.
物語は、「秘仏の扉を開けば仏罰が下る」とされていた救世観音像の開帳をめぐる実際の出来事をもとに構成されている。エルネスト・フェノロサや岡倉天心、九鬼隆一、町田久成といった実在の人物をモデルにしたキャラクターが登場し、それぞれの視点から文化保存の意義が掘り下げられている。秘仏を「開いて守る」という行動が、次世代への継承にどう繋がったのかが物語の軸となる。
The story is based on true events surrounding the opening of the statue’s altar—long believed to bring divine punishment if disturbed. Characters modeled on historical figures such as Ernest Fenollosa, Okakura Tenshin, Kuki Ryūichi, and Machida Hisanari appear throughout the narrative, each offering a unique perspective on the meaning and challenges of cultural preservation. At the heart of the novel lies the question: How does the act of “opening to protect” ensure transmission to future generations?
登場人物たちが同じ秘仏を見ながらも、異なる感情や価値観を抱く点も興味深い。一方は「国の宝」と称え、もう一方は「恐ろしいもの」と感じる。こうした多様な解釈を通じて、美や文化の受け止め方がいかに多面的であるかが浮き彫りになる。
One of the novel’s most compelling aspects is how different characters, while gazing upon the same sacred statue, perceive it in radically different ways. One sees it as “a national treasure,” while another recoils, calling it “something terrifying.” Through such contrasting reactions, the novel highlights the profoundly subjective and multifaceted nature of beauty and cultural value.
