Peonies in Full Bloom at Sekkoji Temple in Nara During Golden Week
奈良県葛城市にある浄土宗慈雲山・石光寺では、約150品種・1,000株に及ぶシャクヤクが4月下旬から順に開花を始める。ピークは例年より早く、ゴールデンウィーク期間中（4月28日〜5月8日頃）に迎える見通しだ。
Sekkoji Temple in Katsuragi, Nara Prefecture, is set to reach peak bloom of its approximately 150 varieties and 1,000 peony plants between late April and early May, particularly around the Golden Week period from April 28 to May 8.
境内には早咲きから遅咲きまで多様な品種が植えられており、花容は一重咲き、半八重咲き、手まり咲きなど変化に富み、色合いも鮮明色や複合色、パステル系など多彩で、訪れる人々の目を引く。牡丹と芍薬の交配種であるハイブリッドシャクヤクや、アメリカで品種改良された系統も植栽されており、種類の多さも特徴のひとつ。
The temple grounds showcase a wide range of peony types, including early, mid, and late bloomers. Flower shapes vary from single and semi-double to pompon and crown styles, while color patterns range from vivid tones to pastels. Hybrid peonies, developed through crossbreeding with tree peonies, as well as American-bred varieties, are also featured.

Morning visits are recommended for viewing, as flowers may wilt under strong midday sun. The temple’s website and Instagram provide real-time updates on blooming conditions.
石光寺は天智天皇の勅願によって建立されたとされる古刹で、境内には奈良時代の塔心礎が残る。また、「染寺（そめでら）」の別名を持ち、中将姫の伝説にゆかりある「染の井」や「糸掛桜」といった史跡も大切に守られてきた。
Founded approximately 1,300 years ago under imperial edict from Emperor Tenji, Sekkoji is also known as “Some-dera” (Temple of Dye), linked to the legend of Princess Chujo. The grounds include historical sites such as the “Dye Well” and “Thread-Hanging Cherry Tree,” associated with her story.
さらに、4月14日から5月14日までは「白鳳弥勒石仏」の特別公開も実施されている。平成3年の発掘で発見されたこの石仏は、彫刻された時代が白鳳期以前と推定され、日本最古の石仏として注目されている。
From April 14 to May 14, the temple is also hosting a special exhibition of the Hakuho Miroku Stone Buddha. Discovered during excavations in 1991, the statue is believed to date back to the Hakuho period or earlier and is considered one of the oldest stone Buddhas in Japan.
