Super National Treasures: Radiance of Prayer – Grand Exhibition of Buddhist and Shinto Art at the Nara National Museum

奈良国立博物館は、開館130周年を記念した過去最大規模の特別展「超 国宝―祈りのかがやき―」を2025年4月19日に開幕した。展示されるのは国宝112件、重要文化財16件、その他15件の仏教・神道美術、計143件で、130年にわたり文化財の保護と公開に尽力してきた奈良博の集大成ともいえる内容だ。
commemorate its 130th anniversary, the Nara National Museum has opened its largest-ever special exhibition, Super National Treasures: The Radiance of Prayer, on April 19, 2025. The exhibition features 143 works of Buddhist and Shinto art, including 112 National Treasures and 16 Important Cultural Properties, showcasing the culmination of the museum’s 130-year commitment to cultural preservation and public access.
展覧会は、時代順の配列ではなく、「祈り」というテーマに貫かれた章立てで構成されている。序章「祈りとは何か」では、仏教伝来以前の日本の信仰に光を当てる神宝や、仏教導入によってもたらされた造形の原点を紹介。第1章「仏に捧げる」では、法会や仏前に奉納された仏像や荘厳具が並び、信仰空間における美術の機能が浮き彫りになる。
Rather than following a chronological order, the exhibition is structured thematically around the concept of prayer. The prologue, “What Is Prayer?”, introduces sacred objects from Japan’s pre-Buddhist traditions and the early forms of religious expression brought by Buddhism. Chapter One, “Offerings to the Buddha,” displays statues and ritual implements dedicated during ceremonies, highlighting the functional role of art within sacred spaces.
続く第2章「仏とともに生きる」では、日々の礼拝や護持を目的とした像や経典、写経が紹介され、個人の祈りと結びついた造形が展開される。第3章「祈りを繋ぐ」では、災厄や戦乱を経てなお受け継がれてきた遺品や、修復によって命をつないできた仏像が展示され、文化の継承という側面に焦点が当てられる。終章では、近年国宝に指定された資料や現代に再評価される作品を通じて、「心のかたち」が今なお脈々と続いていることが提示される。
Chapter Two, “Living with the Buddha,” focuses on statues, scriptures, and sutra copies intended for daily worship, reflecting the personal dimension of faith. Chapter Three, “Continuity of Prayer,” features artifacts and restored statues that have survived disasters and wars, emphasizing cultural transmission. The final chapter highlights newly designated National Treasures and recently re-evaluated works, underscoring the enduring presence of prayer in contemporary society.
さらに会場では、明治以降の博物館制度の成立とともに歩んできた奈良博の歴史も取り上げられ、文化財を守り伝える公共機関としての役割に改めて光が当てられている。
The exhibition also traces the history of the museum itself since the Meiji era, shedding new light on its role as a public institution dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage.

開幕前日のプレス内覧会では、井上洋一館長が「東京や京都ではこれまで大規模な国宝展が開かれてきましたが、奈良博では初めてのことになります。仏教美術と神道美術に特化した、奈良博らしい展覧会です。タイトルに“超”とつけたのは、展示された作品が国宝中の国宝ともいうべき飛び抜けた名品であり、またそれらを生み伝えてきた人々の心もまた、かけがえのない宝であると考えたからです。文化の灯を次代に繋ぐことが、奈良博の使命です」と語った。
At the press preview on the eve of the opening, Director Yoichi Inoue remarked, “While major National Treasure exhibitions have been held in Tokyo and Kyoto, this is the first of its kind for Nara. This exhibition, which focuses on Buddhist and Shinto art, reflects the unique identity of the Nara National Museum. The word ‘Super’ in the title emphasizes that these are not only extraordinary treasures but also symbols of the spirit passed down through generations. Passing on the light of culture is our museum’s mission.”

また、担当学芸員の岩井通浩氏は「今回展示する143件のうち国宝以外の作品も含まれているのは、国宝制度の枠にとどまらない“未来の国宝”とも呼べる作品を伝えたいという意図によるものです。祈りの造形が持つ力と、それを今日まで受け継いできた営みに光を当てたい」と述べた。
Curator Michihiro Iwai added, “Among the 143 works on display, we have included pieces beyond those officially designated as National Treasures because we want to highlight ‘future treasures’ as well. The exhibition seeks to illuminate both the power of prayerful art and the continuous efforts that have preserved it.”
その代表例のひとつが、《飛鳥寺の舎利容器》である。平成31年（2019）に発掘された金銅製の容器には、舎利とともに精緻な玉類が納められていた。内部構造を可視化したCT画像や最新の調査成果も併せて紹介されており、古代仏教信仰の実相を今に伝える資料として注目されている。仏教受容の原点を物語る資料であるとともに、文化財研究の現在形を示すものとして、将来的な国宝指定も見込まれている。
One representative example is the Relic Container from Asukadera Temple, a gilt-bronze artifact excavated in 2019. Containing relics and intricately crafted beads, it is accompanied by CT scans revealing its internal structure. As a vital record of early Buddhist faith in Japan and a testament to current cultural heritage research, it is considered a strong candidate for future National Treasure designation.
