A Millennium-Old Temple Meets Drone Technology: Ninna-ji Explores New Horizons in Cultural Heritage Preservation
世界遺産・仁和寺（京都市右京区）で、床下や天井裏といった人の立ち入りが難しい空間を対象に、小型ドローンを活用した建造物点検の実証実験が行われた。この取り組みは、インフラ点検分野で知られる株式会社Liberaware（千葉市）と、建築分野の老舗・山田商会ホールディングス（大阪市）が連携して実施したもので、千年を超える歴史をもつ古建築と先端技術の融合として注目を集めている。
At the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ninna-ji Temple (Kyoto), a demonstration using small drones to inspect hard-to-access areas such as underfloor and ceiling spaces was recently conducted. The initiative, carried out in collaboration between infrastructure inspection firm Liberaware (Chiba) and construction veteran Yamada Shokai Holdings (Osaka), drew attention as a fusion of ancient architecture and cutting-edge technology.
今回の実証では、同社が開発した小型ドローン「IBIS2」を用い、国宝や重要文化財を多数有する仁和寺の白書院にて、床下および天井裏の撮影・計測を実施。総床面積約196㎡に対して、点検時間は各1時間程度とされ、従来4人が3日を要していた屋根裏の初期確認作業が、ドローンによって半日で完了したという。
Using Liberaware’s compact drone “IBIS2,” the team carried out imaging and measurement in the underfloor and ceiling spaces of Ninna-ji’s historic Shiroshoin building. Covering an area of approximately 196 square meters, each inspection phase took about one hour—dramatically improving efficiency, especially for ceiling spaces where initial checks that once required four people over three days were completed in half a day.
仁和寺は近年、文化財の保存・継承を重視し、オンラインミュージアムの開設や宿坊の整備など、新たな価値創出に取り組んでいる。今回のドローン活用についても、「寺院の点検業務が効率化されるだけでなく、文化財の維持や技術の伝承につながる」と期待を寄せた。
Ninna-ji has been pursuing cultural preservation through forward-thinking projects such as online museums and lodging revitalization. The temple expressed high hopes for drone technology, noting it “not only streamlines inspection processes but also contributes to cultural preservation and skills transmission.”
一方、山田商会HDは「創業120年を超える歴史の中で培った経験に、先端技術を重ねることで、より高い安全性と作業性を実現できた」とコメント。文化財のデジタル保存や災害対策の一助となる可能性にも言及している。
Yamada Shokai HD, with over 120 years of history, also commented, “By combining traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art tools, we’ve enhanced both safety and productivity.” They emphasized the potential of drone-assisted documentation for disaster resilience and heritage continuity.
木造建築の多い日本の寺社仏閣では、こうした狭小空間の保守点検が今後ますます重要となる。伝統と革新が交差する現場で、小型ドローンは新たな「守り手」としての役割を果たし始めている。
