Weeping Cherry Blossoms Inherit Legacy of the Muromachi Era — Illuminated at Aoya Shinmei Shrine and Surrounding Sites
青屋神明神社の枝垂れ桜二世
岐阜県高山市朝日町で、4月21日より「枝垂れ桜ライトアップ」が始まった。会場となるのは青屋神明神社、浅井神明神社、黒川天満神社、万石薬師堂の4カ所。幻想的に照らし出される桜の姿は、春の夜に訪れた人々の心をやさしく包み込む。
The “Shidarezakura Illumination” began on April 21 in Asahi District, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Four locations—Aoya Shinmei Shrine, Asai Shinmei Shrine, Kurokawa Tenman Shrine, and Mangoku Yakushidō—are lit up in soft, glowing light, offering visitors a tranquil spring evening.
朝日町は「枝垂れ桜の郷」とも呼ばれ、その多くが「青屋神明神社」の枝垂れ桜をルーツに持つと伝えられている。室町時代中期に植えられたとされるこの桜は、樹齢500年を誇る大木だったが、平成20年頃にその生涯を終えた。現在は跡地に記念碑が建ち、町の人々がその記憶を語り継いでいる。
Asahi is known as the “Home of Shidarezakura” (weeping cherry trees), many of which are believed to descend from a single ancient tree once growing at Aoya Shinmei Shrine. Estimated to be over 500 years old and planted during the mid-Muromachi period, this massive tree died around 2008. A commemorative stone now marks the site, and the legacy of the tree lives on in the town’s many cherry blossoms.
観桜とあわせて、町内の神社や河川敷では「飛騨あさひ桜めぐり～朝日町の枝垂れ桜 歴史探訪～」が行われている。道の駅ひだ朝日村をはじめ、各神社に設置されたパンフレットを片手に、なぜこの町にこれほど枝垂れ桜が集まったのかをたどる散策も楽しめる。
Visitors can explore the town’s cherry blossom heritage through the “Hida Asahi Sakura Meguri” pamphlets, available at the shrines and roadside station Hida Asahi Village. The guide invites visitors to discover why Asahi became home to so many shidarezakura and where the original ancestor tree once stood.
また、Instagramでは「#朝日桜2025」「#インスタ朝日」を付けて投稿するフォトキャンペーンも開催中。優秀作品には景品が贈られる。
