Legacy of the Heian Period in Full Bloom — Kumano no Nagafuji Wisteria Reaches Peak at Gyoko-ji Temple in Iwata
静岡県磐田市池田地区の行興寺と隣接する豊田熊野記念公園で、国指定天然記念物「熊野の長藤」をはじめとする長藤が見頃を迎えている。
In the Ikeda district of Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the famed “Kumano no Nagafuji” wisteria, designated a National Natural Monument, has reached its peak bloom at Gyoko-ji Temple and the adjacent Toyoda Kumano Memorial Park.
行興寺の境内には17本の長藤が植えられ、総面積はおよそ400坪に及ぶ。なかでも、平安時代に植えられたと伝わる「熊野の長藤」は樹齢850年を誇り、1メートル以上にもなる花房が淡紫のカーテンのように垂れ下がる姿は圧巻である。その荘厳な景観から、国の天然記念物に指定されている。
The temple grounds host 17 wisteria trees covering approximately 400 tsubo (about 1,320 square meters). Among them, the “Kumano no Nagafuji” is said to have been planted during the Heian period and is estimated to be 850 years old. Its cascading clusters of pale purple flowers, over one meter long, create a breathtaking curtain-like display and have earned the tree national recognition.
隣接する豊田熊野記念公園にも広さ1,600平方メートルの藤棚が設けられ、散策路を歩きながら間近に花房を眺め、甘い香りを楽しむことができる。園内には静岡県指定の天然記念物の藤も複数あり、平安の趣を今に伝える藤の名所として、毎年多くの見物客が訪れる。
Next to the temple, the Toyoda Kumano Memorial Park features a 1,600-square-meter wisteria trellis with walking paths that allow visitors to admire the flowers up close and enjoy their sweet fragrance. Several of the wisteria trees here are also designated natural monuments by Shizuoka Prefecture, making the site a treasured destination that echoes the elegance of the Heian era.
例年、長藤の見頃は4月中旬から下旬にかけて。地元の池田まちづくり協議会は開花情報を随時発信しており、市では混雑緩和のため公共交通機関の利用を呼びかけている。
The peak viewing period typically falls between mid- and late April. The Ikeda Community Development Council provides regular bloom updates, and the city encourages the use of public transportation to avoid congestion during the season.
