Crowdfunding Launched to Restore Nagusa Itsukushima Shrine in Ashikaga—Protecting a Sacred Site Rooted in Ancient Spirit Worship
栃木県足利市最北部の里山・名草地区に鎮座する名草厳島神社が、修復費用を募るクラウドファンディングを開始した。昨年10月、同神社の社殿屋根を覆っていた銅板が何者かに盗まれ、その後の降雨により天井や床、祭具類などに深刻な被害が生じた。現在、拝殿屋根の一部はすでに仮修繕が進むが、社殿全体の完全な修復には約500万円の工費を要する見通しだ。
In Nagusa, a rural area in the northernmost part of Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, Nagusa Itsukushima Shrine has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for restoration after a copper roof theft in October 2024 caused significant damage. Rain that followed the theft damaged the ceiling, flooring, and ritual implements, and full-scale restoration is estimated to cost about 5 million yen.
名草厳島神社は、弘法大師空海が勧請したと伝わる弁財天信仰を起源とし、1200年近い歴史をもつ古社である。明治期の神仏分離により市杵島姫命を祀るようになってからも、地元では親しみを込めて「弁天さま」と呼ばれ信仰が続いてきた。国指定天然記念物である名草巨石群の巨岩の上に建てられた社殿は、近年ではアニメファンの“聖地”や避暑地としても注目されており、観光拠点としての役割も果たしている。
Nagusa Itsukushima Shrine traces its origins to a Benzaiten deity enshrined by the monk Kūkai during the Heian period. Following the Meiji-era policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism, the shrine began enshrining the deity Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, though it is still affectionately known as “Benten-sama” by locals. Perched atop massive boulders designated as national natural monuments, the shrine has also gained attention as a spiritual site and summer retreat, drawing visitors including anime fans.
被害を受けてから、地元住民や氏子による寄付活動、火災盗難保険の活用、手作りの募金箱設置など多方面で支援が行われてきたが、資金はなお不足しており、今回のクラウドファンディングに踏み切った。今後は屋根修繕に加え、再発防止のための車止め設置や防犯カメラの整備なども計画されている。
Despite local fundraising efforts, insurance, and donation boxes made by children, financial shortfalls remain. The restoration committee is now seeking broader support through crowdfunding to fund not only roof repairs but also preventive measures such as vehicle barriers and surveillance cameras.
プロジェクト実行委員会の代表・井紀之氏は「5月の例大祭までには屋根修復を実現したい」と語る。修復後も例大祭をはじめとする地域文化の継承に努め、名草の「弁天さま」がこれからも人々に愛される場となるよう取り組みを続けていく。
Committee head Noriyuki Yoshii expressed hope to complete roof repairs before the May annual festival. The goal is to preserve and pass on the cultural and spiritual heritage of “Benten-sama” for generations to come.
