Japan as an Artistic Melting Pot: Kyoto National Museum Explores Cultural Crossroads in Expo 2025 Special Exhibition
大阪・関西万博の開催に合わせて、京都国立博物館では特別展「日本、美のるつぼ―異文化交流の軌跡―」が開幕した。展示会場には、弥生・古墳時代から明治期までにわたる日本美術の至宝、国宝19件、重要文化財53件を含む約200件が集結。古今東西の文化が交差して生まれた“美のかたち”をたどる壮大な試みである。
In conjunction with Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, the Kyoto National Museum has launched a major special exhibition titled Japan, an Artistic Melting Pot: Tracing the Paths of Cultural Exchange. Showcasing approximately 200 masterworks from the Yayoi and Kofun periods through to the Meiji era—including 19 National Treasures and 53 Important Cultural Properties—the exhibition offers a sweeping survey of how Japanese art has been shaped by cross-cultural encounters.
日本列島は、古代より海を介して異文化を受け入れてきた。仏教伝来とともにもたらされた工芸や書、絵画、仮面などは日本で独自の表現へと昇華し、やがて西洋へと輸出された浮世絵や伊万里焼は、逆に海外で再評価されて“日本美術”として世界に広まった。本展では、こうしたダイナミックな文化の往還がもたらした多様性を「るつぼ（坩堝）」にたとえ、日本美の変容と連続性を提示する。
From ancient times, the Japanese archipelago has absorbed influences from abroad via maritime routes. Artifacts brought by the transmission of Buddhism, for instance, were reimagined into uniquely Japanese expressions, while export items like ukiyo-e and Imari ware found acclaim in Europe and were later re-imported into Japanese cultural identity. This exhibition likens such processes to a “melting pot,” illustrating how interaction with other cultures catalyzed aesthetic transformation.
見どころのひとつは、俵屋宗達筆「風神雷神図屏風」（建仁寺蔵）や葛飾北斎「富嶽三十六景」、雪舟の「天橋立図」など、名品として知られる作品群だ。また、明治33年のパリ万博に際し日本政府が自らを“文明国”として示すために編集した『日本美術史』も展示。西洋の視点に応じて再構築された“日本らしさ”が、日本美術史の形成にも影響を与えていたことが読み取れる。
Among the highlights are iconic works such as Wind and Thunder Gods by Tawaraya Sōtatsu (Kennin-ji Temple), Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai, and View of Amanohashidate by Sesshū. Also featured is the 1900 French-language Histoire de l’Art du Japon, produced for the Paris Exposition Universelle as a diplomatic assertion of Japan’s cultural sophistication.
会場構成は時代順ではなく、テーマ別の章立てで構成されており、日本美術がいかに「受容と再構成」を繰り返しながら今日に至ったのかを体感できる。展示作品は会期中に一部入れ替えがある。
Rather than following a strict chronology, the exhibition is organized thematically. It invites visitors to explore how Japanese aesthetics evolved through cycles of adoption and adaptation. Selected works will change between the first half (April 19–May 18) and the second half (May 20–June 15) of the exhibition.
