Secret Statues at Kyoto’s Daigo-ji Temple to Be Unveiled to the Public for the First Time
真言宗醍醐派の総本山・京都・醍醐寺では、修復工事が完了した三宝院内の聖天堂の内部を、ゴールデンウィーク期間にあたる2025年5月1日から6日まで初めて一般公開する。これに合わせ、非公開とされてきた秘仏・聖天像（大聖歓喜天）も三宝院本堂にて特別公開される。また、伽藍内の弁天堂では、宇賀弁財天像が今年6回の己巳の日にあたる日に初公開される予定である。
The head temple of the Shingon Daigo school, Kyoto’s Daigo-ji, will open the newly restored Shōtendō Hall in its Sambō-in complex to the public for the first time from May 1 to 6, 2025. This special occasion also includes the unveiling of the previously hidden statue of Shōten (Great Joyful Deity) in the Sambō-in Main Hall. Additionally, the Benzaiten Hall in the temple’s Garan precinct will feature the first public display of the Uga-Benzaiten statue on six designated “Days of the Serpent” throughout the year.
聖天像は、象頭の双身で抱擁する姿が特徴的な仏像で、ヒンドゥー教のガネーシャ神を起源に持つ。悪神から十一面観音の慈悲により善神へと転じ、家庭円満、商売繁盛、金運上昇の神として信仰を集めてきた。醍醐寺では、三宝院の聖天堂にて毎朝3時から「浴油法」が行われ、僧侶による祈祷が今も続いている。
The statue of Shōten, depicted as an embracing elephant-headed couple, traces its origin to the Hindu god Ganesha. In Buddhist tradition, it is believed to have been transformed from a malevolent to a benevolent deity through the compassion of the Eleven-faced Kannon. Revered for bringing prosperity, marital harmony, and good fortune, the deity continues to receive daily oil offerings in an early morning ritual called yokuyuhō.
今回の初公開に先立ち、堂内の調査が行われ、複数の時代にわたる聖天像が確認された。詳細な調査は現在も継続中で、今後の報告が待たれる。
Prior to the public unveiling, an internal investigation of the Shōtendō Hall uncovered several statues from various periods, indicating a long and layered history of veneration. Further studies are ongoing, and detailed findings are expected to be published in due course.
また、弁天堂で祀られる宇賀弁財天像は、ヒノキ材の寄木造で江戸中期の作とされ、頭上に翁の顔を持つ白蛇の姿の宇賀神を乗せた八臂像。金運、芸能、学業にご利益があるとされ、2025年の乙巳年の縁日である己巳の日（年6回）に、弁天法による特別法要とともに初公開される。法要後には、特別護符や金色守も授与される。
The Uga-Benzaiten statue, enshrined in the Benzaiten Hall within the Garan, is a carved wooden figure from the mid-Edo period. It features an eight-armed figure with a white serpent bearing an elderly man’s face atop its head. Revered for granting success in wealth, the arts, and academics, the statue will be revealed during six kishi (Days of the Serpent) in 2025, accompanied by ritual blessings and the distribution of special talismans.
公開はいずれも予約不要。聖天堂拝観は奉納料1,000円（しおり付き）、祈願料は3,000円より。弁天堂は伽藍拝観券で拝観可能。
No advance reservation is required. Admission to the Shōtendō viewing is 1,000 yen (including a commemorative bookmark). Prayer services start from 3,000 yen. The Benzaiten Hall requires a Garan area admission ticket.
