The Aesthetic Legacy of Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji: “The Shokoku-ji Temple Exhibition” Now on View in Tokyo — Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Shokoku-ji Jotenkaku Museum
京都・相国寺承天閣美術館の開館40周年を記念し、臨済宗相国寺派の本山・相国寺に伝わる文化財を紹介する「相国寺展―金閣・銀閣 鳳凰がみつめた美の歴史」が東京藝術大学大学美術館（台東区上野公園）で開催されている。前期は4月27日まで、後期は4月29日から5月25日まで。
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Shokoku-ji Jotenkaku Museum in Kyoto, a special exhibition titled “The Shokoku-ji Temple Exhibition: Aesthetic History Watched Over by the Phoenixes of Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji” is now on view at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts (Ueno Park, Taito Ward). The first half of the exhibition runs until April 27, with the second half following from April 29 to May 25.
相国寺は室町幕府三代将軍・足利義満が1382年に創建を発願した禅寺で、義満が建立した鹿苑寺（金閣寺）や、その孫・義政の東山山荘に起源をもつ慈照寺（銀閣寺）を塔頭に持つ。展覧会では、こうした相国寺を中心に形成された文化圏が、室町から江戸にかけて日本美術に与えた影響を多角的に照射している。
Shokoku-ji, founded in 1382 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, is a Rinzai Zen temple that oversaw the construction of its subtemples Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji. This exhibition shines a spotlight on the cultural sphere that radiated from Shokoku-ji and its enduring influence on Japanese art from the Muromachi through Edo periods.
展示は五章構成。第1章では義満や開山・夢窓疎石ゆかりの資料を紹介し、明時代の画家・文正筆による《鳴鶴図》（前期展示）など、中国からの文物が与えた衝撃を伝える。続く第2章では、周文や雪舟らの水墨画が並び、禅と絵画が結びついた創造の軌跡をたどる。第3章・第4章では江戸時代の狩野探幽や伊藤若冲の作品が展示される。特に《葡萄小禽図》など鹿苑寺大書院を飾った若冲の障壁画群は、相国寺文化の継承者としての若冲像を浮かび上がらせる。
The exhibition is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 features portraits of Yoshimitsu and the founding priest Musō Soseki, as well as Chinese art brought back by Zen monks. Among the highlights is “Cranes Crying” by the early Ming painter Wen Zhengming (on view in the first half), which exemplifies the Chinese influence on Japanese painting. Chapter 2 follows with ink paintings by artists such as Shubun and Sesshū, charting the fusion of Zen thought and artistic practice. Chapters 3 and 4 highlight the works of Edo-period artists like Kano Tan’yū and Itō Jakuchū, whose bold compositions and brushwork embody the spirit of Shokoku-ji culture. Jakuchū’s sliding door paintings from the Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji) Abbot’s Quarters are among the standouts.
相国寺はまた、外交文書に通じた住持・西笑承兌や茶道文化に関わる道具など、多方面に渡る文化の拠点でもあった。東山御物や茶道具、書跡などを通じ、将軍家や寺院、そして芸術家たちとの有機的な関係も見えてくる。
Shokoku-ji also served as a cultural hub beyond the arts. Exhibited are shuinjō (red-seal permits) drafted by Zen monk and diplomat Saisei Jotai, as well as tea utensils and writing implements associated with shoguns like Ashikaga Yoshimasa. These objects reveal the temple’s integral role in diplomatic and artistic developments.
本展は、承天閣美術館の収蔵品に加え、鹿苑寺・慈照寺などの協力を得て、国宝・重要文化財40件超を含む約160件を展示（前後期計）。日本の禅文化と美術が交差する場として、相国寺の歴史的役割を再認識させてくれる。
With over 160 items on view—including more than 40 Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures—this landmark exhibition offers a rare opportunity to witness the legacy of Zen and Japanese aesthetics as preserved by Shokoku-ji and its affiliated temples.
