Passing on a Thousand Years of Prayer: Kyoto’s Jotokuji Launches Restoration Project for the Hidden Buddha “Tokiwa Jizo”
京都市北区にある日蓮宗の古刹・常徳寺で、平安末期から伝わる秘仏「常盤地蔵」の修復に向けたクラウドファンディングが始まった。源義経の母・常盤御前が懐妊中に安産を祈願したと伝えられるこの地蔵菩薩は、年に一度の大祈願祭でのみ開帳される。今回の修復は、劣化が進む地蔵像の保存を目的とし、貴重な文化遺産を未来に継承するための取り組みである。
Jotokuji Temple, a Nichiren-sect temple in northern Kyoto, has launched a crowdfunding project to restore its treasured hidden Buddha, Tokiwa Jizo, which is said to have been prayed to by Tokiwa Gozen during her pregnancy with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Usually kept hidden from the public, the statue is only displayed once a year during the annual prayer festival. The restoration aims to preserve this culturally significant artifact for future generations.
常盤地蔵は、1159年の平治の乱で夫・源義朝を失った常盤御前が、都の北・紫竹の地にある知足院（現在の常徳寺）に身を寄せた際、安産を願って祀ったとされる。やがて無事に誕生した牛若丸は、後に源義経として名を馳せた。常盤地蔵は、その波乱に満ちた生涯の始まりに寄り添い、母の祈りとともに、今も語り継がれている。
Tokiwa Jizō is said to have been enshrined by Lady Tokiwa when she took refuge at Chisoku-in (present-day Jōtoku-ji Temple) in northern Kyoto’s Shichiku area, after losing her husband Minamoto no Yoshitomo in the Heiji Rebellion of 1159. The child she bore safely, Ushiwakamaru, would later become the famed warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. This statue of Jizō has long been revered as a silent witness to the beginning of his tumultuous life, carrying with it the enduring prayer of a mother across generations.
寺伝によれば、常徳寺は918年以前に創建され、江戸時代の寛永5（1628）年に日蓮宗寺院として再興。再建には京の金工名家・後藤家の支援があったと伝えられる。常盤地蔵の修復は、こうした悠久の歴史を今に伝えるとともに、現代においても「母の祈り」の象徴としての意味を問いかける。
The temple was originally founded before 918 as a Tendai-sect temple and was rebuilt in 1628 as a Nichiren temple with the support of the famed Goto metalworking family. The project reflects not only the preservation of cultural heritage but also the enduring significance of maternal devotion.
プロジェクトでは、2025年4月25日から5月25日までの1カ月間、秘仏「常盤地蔵」が特別公開される予定。併せて、義経にちなんだ御朱印や限定記念品の授与も行われる。
A special one-month public display of the hidden Tokiwa Jizo is planned from April 25 to May 25, 2025. Commemorative items and special Goshuin stamps themed around Yoshitsune will also be available during the event.
周辺には、牛若丸の産湯井や胞衣塚といった史跡も点在しており、義経ゆかりの地としての魅力も高い。常徳寺の住職・鶏内泰寛氏は「この地蔵様に刻まれた母子の物語を次世代に伝えたい」と語る。
With historic sites such as Yoshitsune’s birthplace and relic mounds nearby, Jotokuji offers a tangible connection to the dramatic stories of the late Heian period. Resident priest Taikan Kaichi said, “We hope to pass on the story of mother and child that lives in this statue to future generations.”
