Zen Sauna “Ryujouan” Opens Along Kumano Kodo Trail — Temple Hotel Daitaiji Launches New Retreat Program
和歌山県那智勝浦町の古刹・大泰寺で4月25日、本格フィンランド式薪サウナ「龍蒸庵（りゅうじょうあん）」がオープンした。併せて、サウナ後に禅問答に挑む宿泊型プログラム「禅サウナリトリート」が始まった。
On April 25, Temple Hotel Daitaiji, a historic temple located along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, unveiled “Ryujouan,” a Finnish-style wood-burning sauna. A new stay program, the “Zen Sauna Retreat,” has also commenced, offering visitors a chance to engage in Zen meditation after sauna sessions.

Operated by ShareWing Inc., known for its OTERA STAY brand specializing in temple accommodations, the retreat invites guests to experience deep introspection through self-guided Zen dialogues amidst the serene natural surroundings.
基本プランでは、宿泊とサウナ、タブレットを用いたセルフ禅問答がセットに。さらに、住職・西山十海氏との直接の禅問答や坐禅体験、食事を含むプレミアムプランも用意される。
The standard plan includes accommodation, access to the authentic sauna, and a self-guided Zen dialogue via tablet. A premium plan additionally offers direct Zen dialogues with resident priest Tokumi Nishiyama, seated meditation (zazen), and temple meals.
サウナ設計は、フィンランド大使館認定のサウナビルダーである大西功起氏（株式会社アーティストリー）が手がけた。「本場の精神を継承しつつ、大泰寺でしか味わえない唯一無二の体験価値を考えた」と話す。
The sauna facility was designed by Koki Onishi of Artistry Inc., a certified sauna builder accredited by the Embassy of Finland. “I aimed to create an original experience unique to Daitaiji, respecting Finnish spirit without mere imitation,” Onishi stated.
西山住職は「坐禅の入り口としてサウナを活用し、心の拠り所としてお寺に親しんでもらいたい」と意気込みを語る。
Priest Nishiyama expressed his hope that the sauna will serve as a gateway for people to rediscover the value of temples as communal spaces for spiritual reflection.
サウナと禅の融合による新たなリトリート体験が、世界遺産・熊野古道の地に根を下ろし始めた。
