Towering Tradition: “Tsugizushi” Lion Dance Returns to Imabari’s Spring Festivals
愛媛県今治市で、5月3日から25日までの春祭り期間中、市内各地で伝統芸能「継ぎ獅子」が披露される。人の肩の上に人が立ち上がる演舞は「三継ぎ」「四継ぎ」と呼ばれ、高さ数メートルに及ぶ迫力ある構成が特徴だ。獅子舞の頂点には「獅子児」と呼ばれる子どもが立ち、扇や鈴を手に舞いを披露する。
From May 3 to 25, the city of Imabari in Ehime Prefecture will host performances of Tsugizushi, a traditional lion dance where performers stand on each other’s shoulders to form towering human columns. The child performer at the top, known as the shishiko, dances gracefully while holding a fan or bells.
「継ぎ獅子」は江戸時代中期に始まり、平成12年には愛媛県指定無形民俗文化財に登録された。今治各地の神社で行われる春祭りに合わせて奉納され、地域ごとに異なる演出や衣装も見どころとなっている。
Dating back to the mid-Edo period, Tsugizushi was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Ehime Prefecture in 2000. Today, it is performed as an offering during spring festivals at local shrines across Imabari. Each district presents its own version of the performance, with distinctive costumes, choreography, and sometimes even appearances by tengu (goblin-like figures).
演舞には地元の保存会や獅子連中のメンバーが参加し、子どもから大人までが力を合わせて舞台を作り上げる。継ぎ獅子は、世代を超えて受け継がれる地域の誇りであり、今治の春を象徴する風物詩でもある。
Community-led and multigenerational, the performances bring together children and adults, showcasing the strong bonds that sustain the tradition. The spectacle, with human towers reaching several meters high, is a vivid emblem of Imabari’s cultural pride.
期間中は、乃万・波止浜・朝倉・桜井・旧市内・鳥生・玉川・大西・波方など市内各地区の神社で順次演舞が行われる。開催スケジュールは市公式サイトおよび広報いまばり5月号で確認できる。
