Great Buddha Math: Student Creations Dedicated at Tōdaiji
東大寺大仏殿で3月29日、奈良市内の小学生が創作した算数の問題が「算額」として奉納され、あわせて表彰式が行われた。
On March 29, elementary school students from Nara City dedicated their original math puzzles as sangaku (mathematical votive tablets) at the Great Buddha Hall of Tōdaiji Temple, followed by an awards ceremony.
これは、日本数学検定協会が主催する「算額1・2・3」コンクールの一環で、児童たちが東大寺にちなんだ創作問題を応募し、その優秀作品が奉納されたもの。
The event was part of the “Sangaku 1-2-3” contest organized by The Mathematics Certification Institute of Japan, which invited students to submit original math problems inspired by Tōdaiji. Selected entries were honored and dedicated to the temple.
奉納された算額には、「大仏様の中指の傾きは何度？」「螺髪を1つ伸ばすと何メートルになる？」といったユニークな問題が並ぶ。
The dedicated sangaku included imaginative questions such as “What is the angle of the Great Buddha’s middle finger?” and “If a single spiral curl (rahatsu) were stretched out, how many meters long would it be?”
問題を制作したのは、奈良市立登美ヶ丘小学校の5年生チームで、地域の文化学習の一環としてコンクールに参加した。
The problems were created by fifth-grade students at Tomigaoka Elementary School in Nara City, who participated as part of their local cultural studies.
日本数学検定協会は、算額の文化を現代に伝える取り組みとして2015年から東大寺での奉納を継続しており、今年で通算10回目を迎えた。
The Mathematics Certification Institute of Japan has been reviving the sangaku tradition since 2015, and this marks the 10th dedication at Tōdaiji.
