Izu 88 Pilgrimage Visits Shimoda, Historic Port of Opening — Tracing Sites of Faith and Memory in the Fifth Stage

江戸時代に開かれた伊豆88ヶ所霊場をたどる巡礼「伊豆88遍路」の第5回参拝コースが、5月に実施される。今回は「開国の街」として知られる下田市を中心に、歴史ある札所や神社を訪ね歩く日帰りプランとなっている。
The fifth leg of the Izu 88 Pilgrimage—a historic route established during the Edo period—will take place in May, featuring a one-day itinerary through Shimoda, known as the “Gateway to Japan’s Opening.”
伊豆88遍路は、全12回で首都圏から日帰りで伊豆半島88ヶ所の札所を巡拝できる構成。遍路道の多くは江戸時代の街道に重なっており、当時の風情を感じながら歩けるのも魅力のひとつだ。
Divided into 12 sessions, the Izu 88 Pilgrimage allows pilgrims from the Tokyo area to complete all 88 temple visits through day trips. Many of the paths trace Edo-period roads, preserving the historical ambiance.
今回は下田市内にある第37番札所・地福院から第43番札所・大安寺までを巡る。途中には伊豆最古の神社・白浜神社や、日米和親条約の舞台となった長楽寺、タウンゼント・ハリスが滞在した玉泉寺など、幕末の足跡が色濃く残る史跡も多い。
This route covers Temples No. 37 to No. 43, including historical landmarks such as Shirahama Shrine—believed to be the oldest in Izu—Choraku-ji Temple, where the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Peace and Amity was enacted, and Gyokusen-ji Temple, where Townsend Harris resided.
札所それぞれに歴史的背景があり、寺院の変遷や宗派の改宗などをたどることで、伊豆地域の宗教と文化の重層性を感じられる内容となっている。
Each temple along the route has its own historical narrative, including shifts in sects and reconstruction efforts—offering a glimpse into the layered religious and cultural heritage of Izu.
結願地は伊豆市の修禅寺。江戸からの道のりを踏みしめた先に待つこの霊場で、旅は静かに結ばれる。
The final stop of the full pilgrimage is Shuzenji Temple in Izu City—a place where the long journey from Edo finds quiet closure.
