Ujaku-ji’s Amidado Hall in Kōyasan’s Hinterland to Be Revived After 600 Years — Thatch Roof Restoration Through Community Effort
過疎地の暮らしと文化を次世代につなぐ「地域維持レスキュー」が、和歌山県有田川町を舞台に今夏から本格的に展開される。
A new rural revitalization program called “Chiiki Iji Rescue” is set to launch this summer in Aridagawa, Wakayama Prefecture, aiming to preserve local life and cultural assets for future generations.
この取り組みを主導するのは、地域住民と連携して集落再生や移住支援を行う一般社団法人しろにし。ぶどう山椒の収穫支援や草刈りボランティアなどを通じて、都市と山間部を結ぶ関係人口の創出を進めてきた。
The initiative is led by Shironishi, a local nonprofit organization that has long worked with residents to revitalize villages and support migration. Previous efforts have included pepper harvest support and fieldwork volunteers to build sustained engagement between urban visitors and rural communities.
地域維持レスキューでは、農繁期の人手不足に加えて、生活道や参道の整備、無形文化の継承、空き家や史跡の保全など、多面的な課題に対する支援が組み込まれている。
The broader framework addresses not only seasonal labor shortages but also road maintenance, intangible heritage preservation, and upkeep of vacant homes and historic sites.
この一連の活動のなかで、宗教文化の伝承に関わるものとして位置づけられているのが、高野山の麓にある杉野原地区・雨錫寺阿弥陀堂の修復事業である。
Among these initiatives, one project focused on religious heritage stands out: the restoration of the thatched roof at Ujaku-ji’s Amidado Hall in Suginohara, a hamlet at the foot of Mount Kōya.
室町時代から600年以上続いた御田舞の舞台として知られたこの堂宇では、過疎と高齢化により2018年を最後に祭礼が途絶えていた。
For more than 600 years, the hall served as the stage for Onda no Mai, a traditional rice-field ritual. However, the event was discontinued in 2018 due to depopulation and aging.
今回の修復では、地域住民と行政が連携し、近隣高原から自生するススキを用いて屋根を葺き替える。12月上旬の実施が予定され、一般参加も受け入れる方針だ。
The planned restoration will use native pampas grass harvested from local highlands, in coordination with community members and local government. Scheduled for early December, the project will welcome volunteers from the general public.
