Nezu Museum Opens “Introductory Guide to Classical Art: Sutras and Ink Traces” — Exploring the Aesthetic of Buddhist Calligraphy
東京・南青山の根津美術館は、2025年5月31日より企画展「はじめての古美術鑑賞―写経と墨蹟―」を開催する。
Nezu Museum in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, will open a new special exhibition titled “Introductory Guide to Classical Art: Sutras and Ink Traces” beginning May 31, 2025.
仏教に基づく書として展開されてきた写経と墨蹟を、初学者にもわかりやすく紹介するシリーズ企画の第6弾。整然とした書風と紙の装飾が魅力の写経と、禅僧の個性がにじむ墨蹟を並置し、造形的な違いを視覚的に体感できる構成となっている。
This sixth installment in the museum’s introductory series presents two major forms of Buddhist calligraphy: the stately elegance of shakyō (sutra transcriptions) and the expressive brushwork of bokuseki (Zen ink writings). The show offers side-by-side displays that highlight their visual and stylistic contrasts.
展示の中心には、国宝「観普賢経」や重要文化財「二月堂焼経」など、奈良・平安時代の華麗な写経が並ぶ。禅宗僧の筆跡として知られる無学祖元や一山一寧の墨蹟も出品され、書に込められた精神性を感じる機会となる。
Highlights include the National Treasure Kanfugen-kyō and Important Cultural Property Nigatsudō-yakegyō sutras from the Nara and Heian periods. Also on view are bokuseki by notable Zen monks such as Mugaku Sogen and Issan Ichinei, allowing viewers to experience the spiritual depth behind each stroke.
展示室を二分し、作品の書風や紙、用途を比較できる構成に加え、解説パネルやスライド講座も充実。難解に思われがちな仏教書の美を、視覚と言葉で読み解く入門的試みとなっている。
The exhibition space is divided into two sections to facilitate direct comparison of format, function, and material. Panels and slide lectures will further guide visitors through what is often considered an esoteric subject.
会期は7月6日まで。予約優先制で、館蔵の名品とともに日本文化に触れる貴重な機会となる。
The exhibition runs through July 6. Admission is by advance reservation, offering a rare opportunity to encounter treasures of Japanese religious and artistic heritage.
