Preserving Japan’s Longest Shrine Approach — Hikawa Shrine’s “100-Year Forest Project” Gains National Support Through Crowdfunding
埼玉県さいたま市に鎮座する武蔵一宮氷川神社が、地域の環境保全と教育普及を目的とした「鎮守の杜100年プロジェクト」を展開している。現在、一般社団法人グリーンフォーと協力し、クラウドファンディングを通じて献木支援を募集中であり、目標金額500万円を突破した。
Hikawa Shrine, located in Saitama City, is advancing its “100-Year Forest Project” to promote local environmental conservation and educational outreach. Partnering with the nonprofit Green4, the shrine launched a crowdfunding campaign for tree donation, which has already surpassed its initial goal of ¥5 million.
本プロジェクトは、日本一長いとされる全長2kmの参道を中心に、神社の鎮守の森を持続可能な形で再生し、未来へと引き継ぐことを目指す。参道では近年、大木の立ち枯れや土壌の硬化が進行し、景観や生態系の維持に課題が生じていた。
Focusing on Japan’s longest approach path—spanning 2 kilometers—the project aims to sustainably restore the shrine’s sacred forest for future generations. In recent years, tree dieback and soil compaction along the path have raised concerns about ecological and scenic degradation.
植樹は、切株周辺に苗木を密植し、炭や落ち葉を用いて菌根の張る環境をつくる手法で行われる。監修を務めるのは土壌再生の専門家・高田宏臣氏（高田造園設計事務所）である。
Under the supervision of soil restoration expert Hiroomi Takada, the planting approach involves clustering saplings around stumps and enriching the soil with charcoal, leaf litter, and other organic matter to promote mycorrhizal growth.
また、本企画では環境保全だけでなく、氷川神社を拠点とした教育フィールドの創出も重視されている。植樹イベントの開催や学生との共同運営、地域の子どもたちとの協働を通じて、次世代が自然と祈りの関係を体験的に学ぶ機会を設ける。
Beyond conservation, the project also prioritizes the shrine’s role as an educational field. Through collaborative planting events and hands-on participation by students and children, it offers opportunities for the next generation to explore the relationship between nature and spirituality.
支援者には金額に応じて植樹参加や記念品の進呈が行われ、神社の森に名を残すことも可能。クラウドファンディングの受付は2025年6月20日まで。氷川神社の鎮守の森に込められた祈りが、今、新たな形で全国の支援者の手によって育まれようとしている。
Donors may be invited to plant trees or receive commemorative gifts depending on their contribution. The crowdfunding campaign runs through June 20, 2025. Across Japan, supporters are now helping to nurture Hikawa Shrine’s sacred forest—and its prayers—into a legacy for the future.
