“Should Religious Pavilions Be Allowed at the World Expo?” Surfvote Gathers Public Opinion

2025年の大阪・関西万博を前に、社会対話プラットフォーム「Surfvote」で「宗教のパビリオンはタブーか？」をテーマにした意見募集が行われている。イシューは、正覚寺住職で宗教ジャーナリストの鵜飼秀徳氏が執筆。出展に肯定的な声が過半数を占める一方で、「実質的な布教になる」として否定的な立場も見られる。
Ahead of Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, the civic discussion platform Surfvote is hosting a public opinion poll on whether “religious pavilions at the Expo are taboo.” The issue was authored by Hidenori Ukai, head priest of Shōgaku-ji Temple and a religion journalist. While more than half support such exhibits, concerns persist that they could amount to religious proselytization.
投票では、「伝統的宗教の展示は文化の理解に資する」「宗教と政治は分けるべき」といった多様な意見が寄せられ、宗教と公共空間のあり方を再考する機会となっている。
Responses range from support for showcasing traditional religions as cultural education to calls for stricter separation between religion and public institutions. The discussion invites renewed reflection on the role of faith in public space.
万博のテーマ「いのち輝く未来社会のデザイン」との関係からも、今後の議論の行方が注目される。
Given the Expo’s overarching theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” how religious expression fits into this context remains a matter of ongoing debate.
