Kuzumi Shrine in Ito Appeals for Crowdfunding Support to Save 2,000-Year-Old Camphor Tree
Kuzumi Shrine in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is conducting a crowdfunding campaign to support the preservation and treatment of its 2,000-year-old sacred camphor tree. The target amount is 2 million yen, and the campaign runs until July 11.
The sacred camphor tree at Kuzumi Shrine, designated as a National Natural Monument, is over 2,000 years old. Historically, during the Edo period, it was revered as a deity protecting against smallpox, becoming a significant spiritual support for local residents. Today, however, the tree’s vitality has severely declined, and urgent treatment is required as supports previously installed to hold its branches have become embedded.
The total cost for the preservation project exceeds 10 million yen, with about 3 million yen expected as the shrine’s own responsibility even after partial subsidies. Due to financial difficulties stemming from an aging community and declining visitor numbers, the shrine has turned to crowdfunding for the first time to solicit broad public support.
Kuzumi Shrine, recorded as early as 927 AD, has at least an 1,100-year history. Founded by Kudō Suketaka of the Fujiwara Nanke lineage, it has long been revered as the guardian deity of the Ito family.
Funds raised will be used for tree revitalization, treatment of decayed sections, and maintenance of surrounding trees. Through this campaign, Kuzumi Shrine aims to gather support from across the nation to preserve this significant cultural heritage for future generations.
