Shogoin Temple to Hold Special Exhibition Commemorating “Katsuragi Kanjo-e”
聖護院で特別公開、「葛城灌頂会」を記念した歴史展示開催
本山修験宗総本山・聖護院門跡（京都市左京区）は、2025年10月11日から12月7日までの金・土・日・祝日に、秋の特別公開を実施する。今回は特に、令和7年9月に葛城山中で24年ぶりに行われる大法要「葛城灌頂会（かつらぎかんじょうえ）」を記念し、特別展「葛城今昔―守り続けた祈りの場―」が同時開催される。
Shogoin Monzeki, the head temple of Honzan Shugenshu located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, will host its autumn special opening on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from October 11 to December 7, 2025. Celebrating the “Katsuragi Kanjo-e,” a major Buddhist ceremony conducted in Katsuragi Mountain for the first time in 24 years, a special exhibition titled “Katsuragi Past and Present: A Sacred Place Preserved” will be featured.
本展では、信仰の拠点として古くから守られてきた葛城山中28箇所の経塚に関する資料が展示されるほか、江戸時代に刊行された葛城巡拝ガイドブック『葛嶺雑記』の版木や、紀州徳川家が奉納した「くじら船」の模型も公開される。
The exhibition includes historical materials related to 28 sacred burial mounds (kyouzuka) in Katsuragi Mountain, woodblocks of the Edo-period pilgrimage guide “Katsurei Zakki,” and a whale-ship model offered by the Kishu Tokugawa family.
聖護院は1090年創建以来、皇族や摂関家が門主を務める格式高い寺院で、明治維新まで皇室から25代にわたり門主が入寺した。また、修験道の中心地として、多くの山伏が全国各地で修行を重ねている。
Established in 1090, Shogoin Temple has historically been led by members of the Imperial family and high-ranking court nobility. It continues to serve as the central institution for Shugendo, a Japanese mountain ascetic tradition.
特別公開では、通常非公開の宸殿と書院に収蔵される狩野派の金碧障壁画120余面を鑑賞できるほか、本尊である不動明王像（重要文化財）をはじめ、役行者坐像なども拝観可能。
Visitors can view over 120 splendid gold-foil wall paintings by the Kano school, usually closed to the public, as well as important cultural properties including the statue of Fudo Myoo.
葛城修験は2020年に日本遺産に登録され、今回の展示はその5周年記念の側面もある。聖護院は今後も、歴史ある祈りの場としての伝統を守り続けるとしている。
Katsuragi Shugendo was designated a Japan Heritage in 2020, marking its 5th anniversary this year. Shogoin Temple continues to uphold its longstanding traditions as a site of devotion.
