70 Shrine Maidens to Perform Sacred Dance at Expo 2025: Passing Japan’s Cultural Heritage to Future Generations
2025年6月3日・4日、大阪・関西万博会場内EXPOホール「シャインハット」にて、全国から集結した約70人の巫女が、日本伝統の巫女舞を奉奏する。これは伝統文化未来共創Projectが主催する催しの一環で、各流派の宗家や人間国宝らとの共演による儀礼的な舞台となる。
On June 3 and 4, 2025, approximately 70 shrine maidens (miko) from across Japan will perform traditional sacred dances at the EXPO Hall “Shine Hat” within the Osaka-Kansai Expo. Organized by the Traditional Culture Future Co-creation Project, this event will feature ceremonial performances alongside heads of traditional schools and Living National Treasures.
巫女舞の歴史は古代の神道儀礼にまで遡り、神々との交信を司る神職として重要な役割を果たしてきた。今回の巫女たちは全国各地から集まり、中には神職経験のない若者も含まれるが、日本文化を次世代に継承したいという真摯な思いで稽古を重ねてきた。
The sacred dances performed by shrine maidens trace their roots to ancient Shinto rituals, in which maidens served as intermediaries communicating with deities. The participants, including some young people with no prior experience in Shinto rites, have diligently practiced with the earnest aspiration to pass on Japanese cultural traditions to future generations.
5月下旬には奈良・吉野の金峯山寺で初めての合同稽古が行われ、宗家や人間国宝と同じ舞台に立つ責任と敬意を胸に、それぞれが本番に向けて気持ちを引き締めている。
In late May, the shrine maidens participated in their first joint rehearsal at Kinpusen-ji Temple in Yoshino, Nara. As they prepared to share the stage with renowned masters and Living National Treasures, they felt deep responsibility and reverence, tightening their resolve for the upcoming performance.
この舞台「令和今昔四季物語絵巻」は、神道・仏教・能楽など日本の多様な伝統文化を凝縮した、儀式としての演目である。観客は単なる観賞者ではなく、伝統文化継承の証人としての役割を担うことになる。
The performance, titled “Reiwa Konjaku Shiki Monogatari Emaki,” will be more than a mere artistic spectacle; it will be a ceremonial event embodying the essence of diverse traditional cultures, including Shinto, Buddhism, and Noh theater. Audience members will not be mere observers but witnesses entrusted with the continuity of cultural heritage.
巫女たちは、神々との交流を象徴する榊を手に舞い、伝統的な舞踊である「とこしえの舞」を奉納する。これは「ショー」ではなく「儀式」であり、伝統文化を未来へと受け継ぐという祈りが込められている。
Holding sacred sakaki branches, symbols of communion with the gods, the shrine maidens will perform “Tokoshie-no-mai,” a traditional sacred dance. This performance is not entertainment but a solemn ritual imbued with prayers for the transmission of cultural traditions into the future.
今回の舞台は、大阪・関西万博という世界的な舞台で、日本の伝統文化を次世代がどのように受け継ぎ、そして発展させるのか、その可能性を世界に示す重要な契機となるだろう。
