JR West’s “TWILIGHT EXPRESS Mizukaze” Launches New Course Around Lake Biwa in Spring 2026, Highlighting Historic Temples and Shrines in Shiga
JR西日本が運行する豪華寝台列車「TWILIGHT EXPRESS 瑞風」は、2026年春から、琵琶湖周辺と瀬戸内エリアを巡る新コース「びわ湖周遊・せとうちコース」を開始する。新コースでは滋賀県内の歴史ある寺社を中心に訪れる立ち寄り観光が設定されている。
JR West’s luxury sleeper train “TWILIGHT EXPRESS Mizukaze” will introduce a new course, “Lake Biwa and Setouchi Area Tour,” starting in spring 2026. The course will focus on visiting historical temples and shrines around Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture.
新コースでは、古くから「観音の里」として知られる滋賀県長浜市を訪れ、地域を代表する渡岸寺観音堂（向源寺）と赤後寺（日吉神社）を巡る。渡岸寺観音堂は奈良時代の作と伝わる国宝の十一面観音立像を祀り、日本屈指の名作として知られる。一方の赤後寺には平安時代の重要文化財である千手観音立像が安置され、「転利（コロリ）観音」として地元の人々の篤い信仰を集めてきた。
The new course visits Nagahama City in Shiga Prefecture, long known as the “Land of Kannon,” where passengers will explore the renowned Doganji Kannon-do (Kogen-ji) and Shakugo-ji (Hiyoshi Shrine). Doganji Kannon-do is famed for its “Eleven-Faced Kannon Statue,” a National Treasure from the Nara period, while Shakugo-ji houses the “Thousand-Armed Kannon Statue,” an important cultural property from the Heian period, affectionately known locally as “Korori Kannon.”
新コースでは、これら古代より地域の人々によって守り継がれてきた寺院の歴史や信仰文化を間近に感じることができる。Through this new course, passengers can closely experience the rich history and deep-rooted religious culture preserved by local communities since ancient times.
