Hydrangea Spots in Okayama: Temple Landscapes Blending History and Color

岡山市北区の吉備津神社は、桃太郎（鬼退治）伝説の原型とされる吉備津彦命（きびつひこのみこと）と温羅（うら）にまつわる伝説が残る神社。国宝の本殿から続く全長360メートルの回廊沿いには、青や紫、赤など約1,500株のあじさいが並ぶ。6月21日と22日には「吉備津神社あじさいまつり」も開催予定で、参拝とともに抹茶と和菓子を楽しむことができる。
Kibitsu Shrine in Okayama City is associated with the legendary tale of Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Ura, said to be the origin of the Momotaro folklore. Approximately 1,500 hydrangeas bloom along a 360-meter corridor extending from the National Treasure-designated main hall. The shrine will host the “Ajisai Festival” on June 21 and 22, offering tea and sweets alongside traditional worship.
新見市の済渡寺は、“あじさいの咲くお寺”として親しまれ、約11,000株が境内を彩る。平安時代創建とされ、唐から渡来した“白龍”が陶器技術を伝えたという伝説が残る。白龍にちなんだ白い鳥居型の「白龍門」と境内のあじさいが織りなす対比も見どころの一つ。
Saidō-ji Temple in Niimi is known as the “Hydrangea Temple,” with around 11,000 bushes brightening its precincts. Founded in the Heian period, the temple is linked to the legend of a ‘White Dragon’ who brought ceramic techniques from Tang China. The white torii-style “Hakuryūmon,” inspired by the dragon, forms a striking visual contrast with the surrounding hydrangeas.
備前市の大瀧山西法院は、奈良時代に創建されたとされる寺院で、“あじさい寺”として知られている。境内には約30,000株のあじさいが咲き誇り、石灯籠や滝との調和が幻想的な雰囲気を生んでいる。手水鉢に花を浮かべた「花手水」も名物となっており、6月14日から22日には「あじさい祭り」が予定されている。
Ōtaki-san Saihōin in Bizen, commonly known as the “Hydrangea Temple,” is a historic site believed to have been founded in the Nara period. Around 30,000 hydrangeas fill its grounds, creating an enchanting atmosphere alongside stone lanterns and a waterfall. The temple is also noted for its decorative floral water basins, or hanachōzu.
