Kaneiji Temple in Ueno Offers Summer-Only Paper-Cut Goshuin from June 14 — Design Honors Tokugawa Legacy
上野・寛永寺（東京都台東区）では、6月14日から夏限定の「徳川切り絵御朱印」が授与される。徳川将軍家と縁の深い同寺が企画した季節御朱印シリーズの一環で、数量限定。
Kaneiji Temple in Ueno, Taito Ward, Tokyo, will begin offering a limited summer edition of its paper-cut goshuin, the “Tokugawa Goshuin,” on June 14. The seal is part of the temple’s seasonal series and reflects its historic ties to the Tokugawa shogunate.
御朱印の図案には、不忍池の辯天堂と根本中堂が左右に配置され、蓮や紫陽花などの草花が彩りを添える。透け感のある和紙と繊細な切り絵の構成が、夏の境内の涼やかな情景を表現している。授与は根本中堂で行われる。2023年に初めて導入された切り絵御朱印は、全国からの参拝者を集めてきた。今回の夏版は、その継続として制作された。
The design features Bentendo Hall on Shinobazu Pond and the temple’s main hall, framed by seasonal flora including lotus flowers and hydrangeas. The use of translucent washi paper and fine paper-cut detailing evokes the temple’s serene summer landscape. The goshuin will be available at the temple’s main hall. Since its debut in 2023, Kaneiji’s paper-cut seals have drawn pilgrims from across the country. This summer version continues that initiative.
寛永寺は、1625年に高僧・天海によって創建された。江戸城の鬼門にあたる上野の地に建立され、将軍家の祈祷所および菩提寺として機能してきた。十五代将軍のうち六人が境内に葬られており、徳川家との関係を今に伝えている。江戸時代には、宮門跡を住職に迎えたことで格式を高め、全国でも有数の大寺院となった。本年2025年は、創建400周年の節目をあたる。
Kaneiji was founded in 1625 by the eminent monk Tenkai. Located in Ueno, northeast of Edo Castle, the temple served as a place of prayer and as the mortuary temple of the Tokugawa shogunate. Six of Japan’s fifteen Tokugawa shoguns are buried on its grounds, underscoring the temple’s enduring connection to the shogunate. During the Edo period, imperial princes served as abbots, elevating Kaneiji’s status as one of the country’s foremost temples. This year, Kaneiji marks the 400th anniversary of its founding.
