Izumo Taisha Saitama Hosts “Makomo Summer Festival,” a Seasonal Ritual of Fragrance and Prayer

埼玉県朝霞市の出雲大社埼玉分院では、出雲地方に伝わる真菰（まこも）の神事にちなみ、「真菰納涼祭（まこものうりょうさい）」を6月14日から8月3日まで開催している。
Izumo Taisha Saitama Branch, located in Asaka City, Saitama Prefecture, is holding its “Makomo Summer Festival” from June 14 to August 3, inspired by traditional makomo (sacred wild rice) rituals from the Izumo region.
この祭りは、島根県の出雲大社で毎年6月1日に行われる「涼殿祭（すずみどののまつり）」に由来し、真菰を用いて無病息災を祈る風習を現代に継承したもの。
The festival is rooted in the “Suzumidono-sai,” an annual purification ritual at Izumo Taisha in Shimane held on June 1, in which makomo plants are used to pray for health and protection from illness.
境内では、島根県産の真菰を使った「真菰飾り」や「真菰花手水（はなちょうず）」が設えられ、参拝者はその清々しい香りに包まれながら、特別な参拝体験を楽しめる。
Visitors can enjoy a unique spiritual atmosphere surrounded by the fresh fragrance of makomo, thanks to decorative garlands and floral hand-purification basins placed throughout the shrine grounds.
「真菰福飾り（ふくかざり）」と名付けられた特別な授与品も用意されており、6月21日から7月7日までは七夕にちなんだ勾玉付きの「真菰七夕福飾り」が頒布される。
Special sacred items called “Makomo Fuku Kazari” are also available. From June 21 to July 7, a Tanabata-themed version featuring a small magatama charm will be distributed.
7月8日からは、絵馬と紙札がセットになった通常版の「真菰福飾り」が引き続き授与される予定。
From July 8 onward, the standard version—accompanied by a votive tablet and sacred paper charm—will be offered in its place.
期間中は、島根県雲南市産の真菰を焙煎した「真菰茶」の試飲も用意され、香ばしくやさしい味わいが来訪者を涼ませている。
Visitors can also sample roasted makomo tea made from plants grown in Unnan City, Shimane. Its mild, nutty flavor provides a refreshing moment of rest.
本行事は、近年各地で広がる「夏詣（なつもうで）」の一環としても実施されており、今年から出雲大社埼玉分院も参加。神事の香りや味を通じ、季節の節目に身心を整える場を提供している。
The event is also part of the growing “Natsumoude” movement—a modern midsummer visit to shrines. This marks the shrine’s first year of participation, offering a multisensory encounter with the sacred traditions of Izumo.
出雲大社埼玉分院は、昭和58年に本社から分霊を受けて創建された。かつての荒船神社を前身とし、県内で唯一の出雲大社として地域に根ざした活動を続けてきた。
Founded in 1983 with a transferred spirit from the main Izumo Taisha, the Saitama branch has its roots in the former Arafune Shrine and remains the only Izumo Taisha in the prefecture.
近年は参拝者の減少や信仰意識の変化もあり、神社と地域社会との結びつきが課題となっているが、本行事を通じて新たな交流と信仰の再発見を目指す。
While modern shifts in religious engagement have posed challenges, the shrine aims to renew community bonds and spiritual awareness through seasonal events like this.
